Not a Equipment Question but I was woundering!
« on: May 08, 2005, 03:20:53 PM »
Ok so tonight i was doing my norm pratice and when I was leaving i saw a flyer that said they were going to put on a league over the summer where a different PBA pattern will be put out each week. This is the second house around here that is doing this are houses around the country doing this? And if so just how hard is a PBA pattern. I am thinking about gettin into one of these leagues just for the experience value. Espically since this is just my second year of bowling.

I bowl in the Chiacgo land area, mostly the burbs.  This will be my second summer of bowling on PBA patterns, but I get to bowl with some area pros, & Steve Jaros.  It helps to have some pros show you how the shot is played, help you select the right equipment in your bag, & even beat them once in a while.  It does wonders on your accuracy.  I highly recommend a league like this.  And yes the PBA patterns are difficult to score on, instead of a 4-8 board window on a typical house shot, you only have a 2-4 board window, 4 boards depending if you follow a pro who can open up a particular line.  Very beneficial, I don't know if last summer was the main reason, or if it was an arsenal overhaul, which happened in the middle of the season, but my average went from a 191 to a 206.  Hope this helps you to make a better decision.

I don't see anything like this in my area, but the knowledge and experience you gain on a weekly basis is invaluable. Instead of spending $400-$500 on 1 regional entry, seeing only 1 patter and bowling less than 10 games on it, you can see every pattern over the course of the league for a lot less $$! I would do that in a heartbeat!

Great points the machine, (this forum really draws good insightful people)

I agree with you 100%, only problem with the older players who didn't have these obstacles to deal with before find it truly hard to believe.  The game wasn't that difficult before, there are definitely more variables today then we used to have.

Also agreed that I see many bowlers who can score on the THS and truly think they are now 220 bowlers.  Not realizing they have 5-6 boards of area and are using them all...  Like you say, they become complacent thinking they are making quality shots when really it is the condition that's giving them the scores.

I was an active member of the local Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT) Masters group out here but it only consisted of a core group of about 10-15 people.  The shot is always a dead reverse and shooting even will normally make the cut.  We have so many "prima donnas" out here in my area that will only bowl walled up shots so they can say how they averaged 230 but lost to the guy who went 400 over for 8.  The Masters division died of course due to lack of participation.

Bowling is bowling, scores are simply relative to the shot and condition.  I'd still like to see just a flat pattern put out with no free hook or free hold and let's see where your game is really at.

After spending 3 years on Sport Bowling conditions and 1 year on PBA patterns I don't believe that a flat pattern would be an answer. Depending on who is bowling with you it basically breaks down lousy and the night becomes frustrating. On a flat pattern it never gets any better then the first shots thrown. Combine that with carrydown and particle balls being thrown, after a short period of time, even good quality shots do not carry or ball reaction is not consistent even if well thrown. We want to be able to "learn" and on hard patterns with a lot of variables people lose interest, even the good ones. Remember the PBA bowled 3 weeks on Sport Bowling, averaged 197, and cancelled it because even they were frustrated with the breakdowns.

However 3:1 or 4:1 patterns are more probably the way to go. PBA patterns are close to that and the transitions force you to make moves at least once a game. The shot still has to be interesting enough to be tough but enjoyable to participate on or peoples interest will be lost. Mo Pinel wrote some great articles on this and he hit the nail right on the head.

You know what the USBC should do? Put out 3 or 4 "Classic League" patterns and let the true classic leagues bowl on them. Maybe have separate prizes for these type of leagues. Make classic leagues the next step up like it was years ago. We lose too many bowlers from these leagues as it is. Proprietors must be given specific patterns that they don't have to think to apply. Most don't have time to fool with trying to get ratio patterns down properly. Could we get the USBC to do this? Doubtful, since they don't enforce the basic lane dressing rule they have now, but hopeful thinking.

Maybe we should start a petition for classic league patterns.

I would like to thank everyone for their insite to this topic. I have read and enjoyed everyones topics. I am not sure if I will be bowing in this league because of the sideline crap I had in the monday night league this year. I will try to keep it short and sweet but basically i have been in a league where the fund is 3g's a person for first place. Its a 9:30 league and for the first half we were bowling on fired lanes and beged for more oil. So split season came and the president who is the pro shop owner in that house said ha we will do this and put a reverse block without striping the lanes. Well I had no idea that it was not just a conbo of me but that the lanes were so messed up. It caused me to go out and strive to do better so i went to a coach. GOt my equipment looked at and found out that on 4 balls there were at least 3 things wrong with each one. So I raised hell got involved with ABC about the lanes and everything. Right now I am semi comfortable going into that house but still there is bad blood. There is another house that will be doing this same program but its 10 bucks more a week to bowl on it then the other house is. RIght now being without a job I do not think I could justify to my self spending 30 bucks a week for just 3 games of bowling.  I do thank you all for ure words of wisdom and hope to have better news and scores to come.

If you are having trouble with ball drillings there are great guys on this sight to help you. Don't be to proud to ask. They have helped people even if it was not a Track ball. While the guys on here specialize in Track equipment the pay attention to most others co.s stuff too.

But Track gives you the best ball reactions.

My buddy had a similiar problem with his GP@, slow speed decent had. Polished it up to 1500 shot 300-795. Might as well use it if you can unless you just carry it for floods. Rolls pretty nice polished!

Yeah It spends alot of the time at home. My speed is not bad revs are 300 to 350. SO idk what it is might just not like my line so much. It does spend alot of time at home thou being that the guy who screwed everything up forced me to look into other companies and found a used Triple X that my coach acctully stoped useing. Ball was in outstanding condition and the lug work was dead on. SO bought it for i think 60 or 70 bucks includeing drilling. That ball right now is my go to ball i found that after hittin the cover with a green pad it actully took off on me so much that i had to move really deep and in. Well not at first did this happen so i bought the vertigo being thats resin and not particle. I will be the first to say the Vertigo will not handle as much as the GP2 will but i like the snappyness of the Vertigo being that its resin. I do not intend to give up on track. I will always carry a Track ball in my bad and if there is no room i will make room. Every bowler will remember what ball they used when they poped their 300 cherry and I did with my Hex-Treame. Track will always have a place in my bag.
