Practice.....Help....need advice....
« on: May 01, 2006, 06:28:02 AM »
I've been reading all through this site and I've yet to see anyone ask a question about Practice...or how to go about practicing. So....I need some advice about Practice....Can someone give me a good routine to follow when going out to practice? Things to do when practicing? Things not to do when practicing!

Chuck :-)

Well I know for myself I did nto have much time to practice this season because I did 7 leagues. But an effective way to practice is first, NEVER practice for scores. They will come once the execution and mind frame is there. 2. Always have a plan of attack before entering the bowling alley, if there was something in specific that you struggled with in league that week, then make that your first plan of attack. 3. Know your limit, always allot a certain amount of time for the session. Often we over do it in practice and once fatigue sits in, we become frustrated at times because level of execution decreases. 4. Record yourself if possible, that way when you go home you can further critique things yourself. An alternative to that is to have a pair of eyes behind you, someone who knows the sport and can direct you appropriately. This should get you going in the right direction and scores and progression should come.

Hey Chuck,

Lefty210 offers some great advice.  I also preach to never score when practicing, this will hopefully allow you to focus more on the true reason you're there.

One other small tip if you're working on a release.  Go all the way up to the foul line, back up about 3 feet and do the one step approach method.  I've been doing this for my students for about 20 years now and what it allows one to do is to create more feel at the point of release because no other body muscles will be in motion or use which can deter creating the proper feel for replication.

One step: standing upright, let the ball swing, when it hits the top of your backswing, take a step forward and then release.  "Feel" of the release is one of the most important factors in replication as it is with shooting a basketball or throwing a curve in baseball.  Hope this helps some....

I agree....I despise trying to score while practicing...I am just trying to get my timing down and see what reaction I get out of my stuff...

When I practice, or have someone in I am giving a lesson to, first thing I tell them is to WORK ON 1 THING AT A TIME....too much will only confuse you more....

Clint hit the nail on the head. If you try to do to much, it's almost as bad as not practicing at all.

Another good way of getting practice is to use the first ball to shoot at the corners (7 or 10) which tends to be a lot of peoples "Bogey" pin and then use the second ball to practice hitting the pocket. This way you get better value for you $ as well as spare & strike practice.
I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.
