Phenom layout advice
« on: July 25, 2006, 11:51:01 PM »
Looking for a suggestion or two on a layout for a newly acquired 15# NIB Track Phenom (thank you, eBay!), unsure of pin or TW though, so that will obviously play into the choice of layout.

My stats: About 15-16 mph, i'd say medium-high amount of revs, high tracker, somewhat versatile (meaning can crank it, can stroke it, most comfortable somewhere in between).  I like to play inside if I can, but can play outside as long as it's not terribly direct (but learning ), I like layouts that provide a bit of pop on the backend, I find that I can make the ball roll more with hand position changes than I can make it flip with the same changes

Ideally this ball will fit the medium-heavy to heavy spot in my "arsenal" and it will be the strongest ball I'll have right now (more than a Black Widow drilled pin under ring, MB strong, sanded to 1000 grit).

I was thinking of trying Mo's asymmetrical flip layout, which is pin 1 1/2" from VAL, 3 to 4 1/2" from PAP, MB at least 1" right of centerline, the description is "ball reacts hardest at the breakpoint and turns the corner (short transition drilling)".  This looks ideal but I would be worried then about the ball being more long than strong, but it is a strong-ish particle ball designed for heavier oil, so maybe I shouldn't be too worried.

Any suggestions here would be appreciated, feel free to talk me out of this idea of mine and talk me into a new one, I'm always open for suggestions...many thanks ahead of time!

How about this...you send the first one to me, I drill it up for me, and we will see how it rolls and then we'll decide how to drill the 2nd one....

Just kidding...I was actually watching those as well, just never got around to bidding on them.

With your drill suggestion, I would not be worried about it going too long as the Phenom LOVES oil...I used mine all the way until the GP2 came out...it was a great ball for me and the only problems I had with it was burning too early when the heads fried....

There's been others Clint, I wouldn't worry too much about it, I got mine with no fight, I was the only bidder

I did have a Phenom back when I was throwing 16#, but it was pin up and polished, didn't roll too good polished, but then again polished strong particle has never rolled well for me.

I think I may go with the Asymmetrical Flip drilling as described above, if it rolls out I'll take the cover up a bit with abralon.

Now to wait on that Inertia...my jaw hit the floor when I saw it was going to be comparable to the Unleashed *drools*...

Other opinions are welcomed by the way...

Andrew,

I have yet to try the Asym Flip drilling on a ball. I am going to try it on a Mean Machine ASAP.

According to everyone that I have spoken to that has used that layout they really love it. I do not know if it will place the ball in the heavy category though. The Asym Flip layout is designed to strength down the lane.....on a house shot I think you would be OK...but if you hit heavy in a tournament I think you would want something that would roll a bit sooner.

Ideally I wouldn't like this ball for the house shot, I would like it more for heavier conditions (but not necessarily a flood, no ball will move on a flood) but still have a little movement in the backend rather than just all roll.  Maybe if I go for the Standard Asymmetrical drill (pin 1 3/4 to 2 3/4" above the midline, 2 to 6" from PAP, MB at least 1" right of centerline) that'll be a little better, their description is "The ball reads the midlane with continuation on the backend (medium transition drilling). Maybe that will work better?

Andrew,

I think that would be more suitable for what you are looking for bud.

If you haven't found it already - the Machine drill patterns on Track's webpage will give you an idea of drillings for assym. according to your speed/revs/desired reaction. I do not know if this will work 100% with the old cores, but Carl will know for sure - I have utmost confidence in Excaliber
