phenom unleashed
« on: July 26, 2005, 05:41:56 AM »
i have a question i have a phenom unleashed and at times it is a decent ball with good response and hit but for the most part its a ten pin monster.I use this ball when i want to practice my 10 pins, what is the ball doing and is there anything i can do to the cover to minimize what the ball is doing that it wont carry the corner.1 other thing considering that it is 1500 matte oob if i took down to say 800 would it be more of a heavy oil ball which is what i bought it for but cant seem to get it to face the pocket in any serious volume

The Unleashed is a lighter load of particles and a little different cover than the orginal Phenom. When compared to each other, the Unleashed went about 3-4 boards less than the original Phenom. Because of this, the Unleashed for me was not an oil ball, it was a break down shot ball.

For you, the ball is doing one of the following:1. Lots of oil, ball doesn't create enough friction, never gets into a good roll and comes in too late, leaving ringing 10s. 2. There is not enough oil and the particle in the cover is making the ball want to turn early and is using its energy too early in the lane and making the ball "burn out" by the time it gets to the pins, making it hit weak, also leaving 10s, and sometimes some other stuff as well.

Which one is it for you? That will help us decide which way for you to go to help you out!

Thanks!

When I first got my Unleashed, I had the same problem. Green Scotch Brite, Clean & Dull, played a more direct line, say 15 out to 8, end of problem. I guess I expected the ball to be a liitle bit more than it was. Terrific ball, use on medium/medium heavy conditions. I found the monster I was expecting a little while later called the GP2. Hope this helps ya!!

my ball is polished in order to play a lighter shot and i believe the ball isnt finishing i think i am still giving the ball too much room the ball has a 1 inch pin and i have been told that pin in balls dont flair much so it wont have a big recovery, the ball is also really bad in transition, bowled it yesterday on a fresh 38 foot house shot over under big time. i couldn't give it room right it wouldnt get back and couldnt play tighter ,thru the nose, shot my assassin and crushed the pocket, also polished ,picked up my elnino polished wasa able to get this ball 3 boards right and crushed the pocket ,bagged the phenom. i was bowling with a friend of mine and he too was amazed at how lazy the ball was ,but with little head oil the ball is much better from the inside out line any oil your guess is as good as mine

More surface will help the over under. It will allow you to move into the oil more and recover due to the more surface and less polish. I could never really use the Unleashed on fresh oil as inside it would not recover and outside it turned too much...so I just used my original Phenom and everything was ok.

Where are the pin and Mass Bias in relation to your axis point? That makes a ton of difference in what the ball can and will do.

i dont know what the pin relation to pap is the ball was drilled some years ago and then i knew even less than i do now but i do know that the ball is a pin in ball,1 inch with about 2.5 oz top.the pin is beneath the ring finger about 1,1/2 inches and it has a about a 3/4 in wt. hole if i am not mistaken the hammer is the mass bias or is it the cg ,i dont know but the hammer is 3.5 inches from thumb and at the 4:00 position,(all measurements on center),my wt. hole looks to be center of my grip and 5 inches from pin. 2nd finger hole pin cg and mass bias are all in line
@-@
  *   0
   .
 @
     &
@ =holes,*= pin,.= cg,&= mass bias or switch the .and the & if this is more correct,0 is wt hole, this is as close as i think i can get to give u a depiction of what i am trying to say.(*) to (.) distance overall 1 inch,(.) to hammer(&) 6 inches, finger to thumb overall 7 inches

The mass bias could be in a stronger spot (mass bias on VAL gives very early roll)than under/just beside your thumb, which would make the ball roll earlier and be able to handle more soup. Other than redrilling, which I use as a VERY last resort, would be to use surface adjustments until you find a desired reaction.

yeah i am sorry my drawing moved on me when it posted but my driller suggested putting the ball on a spinner and sanding it in the direction of my flare so i guess i will try that.i have so many non working balls that i refuse to buy anything else until i get what i have to do something

i had the ball sanded to 320 and it is more usable now still only a med shot ball at best but at least the percent of carry is better for the pocket hits
