Very very disappointed ex-faithful Tracker
« on: May 31, 2007, 07:55:19 AM »
I have been bowling for a short time (5 years) and I've been a diehard Track guy from the start.  My problem is that I've had 5 Track balls crack around the entire ball and 3 of these balls had less than 10 games on them.  No other manufacturer has cracked except for Track and I'm not sure what can be done to prevent this from happening with the rest.  I store my bowling balls in my walk-in closet because it's almost always mid 70's in my house and keeps them out of the sunlight.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Is there anything that can be done about it?

Short of warranty returns, nothing preventable.

I just recently had a Solution crack on the shelf, undrilled.

I live in Las Vegas does not matter what brand they crack no matter whether in the house or garage, if you are in a hotter climate i would not bag a ball company over the cracking issues.

I would accept that response if any other company cracked also but I have 33 balls in there and every company is represented at least 3 times.......Why Track?

So why would Columbia or AMF not crack for you then, same cover's were used even though they all clamed differently????

I've heard of cracked bridges on Track stuff, but that affects many manufacturers.  I've never heard of epic cracking of Track stuff though, what balls did you have that cracked?

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

We had a Havoc do that in our shop about a year ago, that was sitting for nearly 1 year.  Did yours hatch a shiny demon too?

I have not had this problem in the past. I will say that I had a Solution arrive from the distributor that was cracked in the box!!!!! I have drilled many, and I mean MANY Track balls, incuding my own and I have not seen a cracking problem that is any more apparent than with any other company.

I will add this though....I do not use finger grips and try to not use thumb slugs and I have never seen a ball crack drilling without grips or slugs. I toyed with the MS grips for awhile and I did get some cracking.....but never got any when I didn't use grips or slugs.

Hopefully any issues with manufacturing are gone and to never return. Ebonite holds their manufacturing process to a very high standard.

Personally, I have had a few Track balls crack on me. I think that I ran through a Triton Heat, 3 different Freaks, 2 Threats, and now my Rule cracked as well. But I can say that I have had equal issues with other companies' equipment as well. Generally by the time that these balls have cracked, it has been close to replacement/retirement time, except for my Freaks, which were all covered under warranty.

I was told by a ball company executive that reactive resin balls are VERY prone to cracking because of the additives used to make urethane reactive. The most indestructible material is pure urethane. I have never seen a urethane ball crack with inserts! I have seen plastic balls, mainly old Columbia 300 yellow dot bleeders, Roto Star bleeders etc... bust to pieces while drilling them because the plastic was so old.

I saw two balls crack in half, I mean split like someone took a circular saw to them. One was my Synergy solid, the other was my Purple Critical Mass. Both of these balls were in storage for a few years as I went down to 15lbs. One was in the attic so the heat was the factor I am certain. I had many other balls up there and saw a bridge crack on a Hot Coral from sitting as well. Store them in the basement.

None of the above stopped me from continuing to use Track Equipment. I have 16 or 17 undrilled balls in storage now (not in an attic).

My $0.02....

Check the serial numbers on the balls that cracked. See if they were from similar run times. Also see if you can remember when they were received. I've long felt that eqipment manufactured and cured in a hot climate (San Antonio), then shipped in an unheated chamber up north in the winter, probably stored in an unheated warehouse (ask your supplier), then shipped via UPS in an unheated truck that is open and closed all day long exposing the equipment to the winter air, then taken into a nice cozy warm pro shop where we tend to like using space heaters and drilled with bits that heat up quite a bit....see my point?

That's a lot of expanding and contracting...

I'm betting we have a lot more breakage in the winter climates than in areas where folks have to endure "winters" where they actually need to sometimes put on a sweater in the evening to go outside. Bbbbrrrrrrrrr...

If a ball cures too quickly (summer time heat exposure?), like fast curing cement, it might become brittle. I've seen more breakage from the San Antonio plant than any other. I'm guessing that this issue has recently been absolved. Kentucky can get cold...

Hey bigdog,

I have in my shop right now, old Brunswick Attack Zone, Code Red, Storm Agent, and had an AMF Whiplash pearl plus one of my personal Track balls that have a crack like the San Andreas Fault.

Blueraider is correct, this is also the best of my knowledge to offer.  This is why even houseballs went towards full urethane for durability and longevity.  I know about his firsthand from center management.

I posted this a while ago but the only consistent thing I found with this happening is that the ball sat (in the same position) for a minimum of 2 months straight without being moved.  My shop in Northern California does not get more then 90'ish to a low of 50'ish in temp, nothing like back home in (Chicago) midwest or east coast.

Sorry to hear man but unfortunately this happens. Let me know what I can do to help if possible, thanks.
