Don't look away!!!!
« on: January 15, 2006, 04:19:19 PM »
I am going to take a page out of Rick's book and post something that I have noticed MANY bowlers doing lately.

I coach highschool bowling.....and bowl nearly everyday and it amazes me how many bowlers look at their target until they are a split second from releasing the ball. At this point majority of the people that do it end up looking down towards where they will set the ball down. This is not a bad thing when you can do it consistantly and with great accuracy down the lane. Most bowlers, however, tend to fall off balance and lose sight of their intended target and ball path.

SO-----------Don't look away. Keep your eyes focused on your target and it will help your game.

I too have done this since I started many years ago. I have carried as high as 222 doing this, but have found out that since I have started to look at my target while shooting a 10 pin I have not missed.

I have a arm swing that allows me to trust the ball, but I am not saying looking at a mark and watching the ball roll over it wouldn't improve my overall game.....

I too used to avg. high not looking at my target.  Most bowlers who bowl on easy house patterns can get by with this form of targeting.  Once a bowler who doesn't aim bowl on tough lane conditions they are screwed for the most part.

If you bowl on tough lanes such as sport or pba conditions looking at where your rolling the ball is a must for good scoring.

Chitown,

You have to remember this, I am OLD enough to have bowled on house shots where you only had a 2-3 board area to hit. Not like today where you throw it to the right and let it come back. If the kids of today bowled on the old laquer? patterns of time past they would take up golf.

Hey Shipper,

I, for one would love to compete on 'old school' type shots just because of the challenge. Last summer I bowled in a PBA pattern type league and averaged only 180 and was high average for the league! I'll gladly take on that challenge regardless of the result! I believe "Spare Shooting" is a lost art today in the world of Bowling! God Bless you all!

Mo Pinel covers this in his book, "See It, Feel It, Do It" (which I recently purchased and have "devoured" for its content). The section on Focal Point Alignment System covers target, focal point and ball trajectory; basically, proper use of these helps prevent cutting off the shot [not following through] and pulling/tugging the ball inside of your target line. GREAT stuff !!!
I've been working hard in practice since buying and reading this book and I've been more consistant, more confident, and more solid in my approach fundamentals; all deuces the past three weeks of league and rolling about 15 pins above my current average for that time period.

Me personally Im comfortable not looking at my target down the lane.  Before I bowl I know exactly where I want to throw it and how to throw it and Im usually within 2 boards of where I want it to go.  I bet alot of people can close their eyes right when they throw the ball and it will be right at where it would have been if you were looking at the target.  Atleast thats how it is for me.  I just think bowling is a comfort and feel sport so whatever you are most comfortable with and if its working you should stick to.  No need to force yourself to "play by the book" if you are not comfortable with it.

I used to think the same way.  When I bowled on tough conditions I paid for not looking at the target because if your off a little bit your screwed.  If your comfortablewith your scores on tough lanes with that approach then don't change.
