Question for all that have knowledge of bowling.
« on: February 20, 2006, 06:27:13 AM »
When bowling in places where the shot is drier, and I have to throw it hard, I have a tendency to Grab the ball at release, causing it to hook early. I was wondering if i should try either more reverse in my fingers, or try a ball drilled sarge easter??

Let me know what you all think. I have about 9 balls on the way, so i'd gladly sacrifice a ball in the current lineup to try it out!

here's something that works for me on drier stuff. my normal target method no matter where i play on the lane is to use two targets, one at the rangefinders, and one at my breakpoint. is the lanes are drier i ssight my eyes closer to my breakpoint rather than at the arrows. in simple terms, look farther down the lane with your eyes. i would definitely try this before you learn to loft the ball. lofting the ball tends to make the ball more erratic, it might hook one time, it might not. ever heard of john jowdy? his whole method of teaching does NOT involve lofting the ball at all. if you try this method i think it will work for you. let me know if it works.

quote:
I wouldn't look to a grip change but a physical change.  I had the same issues and no changes worked as well as some swing changes. The most important being "flattening" the plane of my swing.  That is, creating a longer flat spot at the bottom apex of the swing so that the ball is being released parallel to the ground, almost like a plane landing.  The ball has more push and greater read.  You also have the added benefit of being able to throw much more agressive balls.

I had problems on drier lanes because I was being forced to used much weaker equipment and had greater lane transitions.  Fred Borden helped me with my swing by me getting the ball into the swing early and having a hinge pushaway.  Hard to describe in words but the first shot off my hand was an eye opener. It took a while to get it down and even now when I get to lanes where I'm getting early  or too much hook, I'll exagerate my swing as a first adjustment.  It's allowed me to be able to use much stronger balls even when they hooked.

Hope that helps.

how bout you share the wealth and teach it to meEMMTL is killing me...

tried a bit of the changes last night. Mostly, I tried to make sure my grip and armswing were totally relaxed. I also started putting my fingers in last. Although this felt extremely weird, I becasme used to it. It definatly help get down the grab tendancy. I think that If i continue this way, all have to shorten my span a tad. More to come....
