I really enjoy learning all about ball dynamics and how different layouts affect the way a ball reacts on certain conditions. Can you reccommend any good references or resources that I can use to learn more about the drilling/laying out of bowling balls. I already own the 2 books, Revolutions and Revolutions II by Donovan (Chip) Zielke. I really enjoyed both of them, but I would more. Can you point me into the right direction. As I have said before, Chuck has helped me a great deal, but I would like to learn some of this too.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers

Hey, where is your Animal Untamed. You gotta have one of those.
Here's a nice little site to check out:

Don't be afraid to ask the guys on this site questions either.
That "is" why we all go to this site.

I just bought a Rule, Exception, and Freak-a-Zoid. Funds are running low!
Besides I am in the process of paying for a wedding. Don't worry, I want one of those too! Thanks for the site!

Hey bts,
In the big picture sense, it's just a matter of understanding what gravity does to controlling weights in an object and everything is tied in mathematically. Quick example:
Ball circumference = 27 inches..then half of that =
Half of ball = 13 1/2 inches...then half of that =
Quarter of ball = 6 3/4 (generic mass bias distance)...then half of that =
Leverage point 3 3/8
A weightblock will always want to pull towards gravity and that motion is known as its PSA (preferred spin axis) or as I refer to it, it's resting point. The closer we place a weightblock to this position, the faster it will rotate there. The farther away we place it, the longer it will take to rotate there. So a pin distance below 3 3/8 will turn down faster (roll sooner) vs a pin distance placed above 3 3/8 (roll later).
Mass Bias is the heaviest or densest part of the weightblock that is closest to the surface of the ball. It's another controlling weight (if >=.008) that affects reaction. This helps control reaction shape or breakpoint, still working around our magic number of 3 3/8.
Here's a link to some info put together from some of the "inmates" here (as Charlest's puts it
). Hope this helps some...

Hey, my wife came up with our pro shop name......
But on the serious side (that statement is true though) I would try to go to a distributor through your local pro shop and attend a seminar for drilling, etc. They are usually offered every so often. Also, if you could go to the annual trade shows the distributors hold, there is usually a wealth of knowledge to be found. You can get up and close with the main people from each and every company and can pick their brain for a few minutes here and there. Most usually will take the time to answer any questions you may have!
