Reaction shape selection
« on: January 24, 2005, 12:17:46 PM »
How does a bowler select the right reaction shape for his/her game.

Does your ball, speed, pap, axis tilt dictate your choice or do the lane conditions.

If there is a way, which Track balls fit in what category?

Any help is appreciated.

Lefty,

Because of my game, I usually let the lane conditions determine what reaction shape I want.  For drier/shorter patterns, I usually like a ball that goes a bit longer.  For heavier/longer patterns I want a ball that starts hooking earlier.  If you have a ball tht hooks alot on a drier pattern, the ball will tend to overreact.  The reverse is true.  If you have a ball that is drilled to go longer and you try using it on a heavier pattern, you run the rick of the ball not making the turn to the pocket unless you have alot of hand.  Hope this helps.  Ex or Rick could probably explain it abit better than me.

lefty,

Ball speed, PAP, tilt dictate layouts. The lane conditions dictate what kind of reaction you will choose. Basically everything mentioned are taken into account when you pick a layout for a ball.

Yes to all of the above as Ex stated.  However, I add all the components together to get the big picture.  I take the bowler as a whole and the common denominator is how much he/she can hook the ball.  My basic idea behind matching a bowler to a piece, to a condition and then layout, is still trying to get that particular bowler to the "proportionate" amounts of skid, hook and roll.  That's what we're always looking for, is to get a ball to roll 60 feet with the correct amount of distance within each phase to help store the necessary energy or entry angle needed to strike.

Bts is basically stating this by trying to offset heavy oil w/ early roll and length on dry lanes.  He's just trying to offset his game to get the correct "proportions".  Hope this makes sense...and helps some.
