Is this true???
« on: December 31, 2003, 10:23:58 AM »
I attended a clinic run by Del Warren and Mo Pinel a couple of months ago. At this clinic they stated balls marked with a strong MB (ex. Onslaught and Phenom)really are not drilled to their full ability if you place the pin above the finger line.

I have had 2 Phenoms with the pin drilled above and I find it very hard to believe they could have performed better with the pin lower. If they would have performed better (one of them I really could not use because of the span being drilled too long) they would have totally knocked my socks off.

I am by no means questioning these 2 guys that clearly know what they are talking about, what I am doing here is seeing if anyone else believes this to be true as well.

Also what I wanted to ask about is something else they said. They said that the normal pin low drillings in these types of balls will not track over the finger or thumb holes for those that track high. I have found this to be true so far. But has anyone else found this to be false?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

In regards to the first portion of your post..about better performance with drill patterns under the finger line. Yes I've noticed a Large diffrence between balls drilled above the fingers verses below. i have 2 Phenoms and 2 Unleashed, with opposite drills meaning above and below, the balls drilled above have a tendicy to "push" to much or more overunder. But those drilled UNDER, move easier in all conditions. making these balls more Versitile. but thats just me and im half way drunk at 2:50am on New Years Day!

Typically the old defintion of pin out vs pin in was that a pin out created more imbalance(wobble) in the ball, therefore creating more length before it reached it's PSA(preferred spin axis) and the pin in started a ball rolling sooner assisting a ball towards its' psa creating a more even controlled look.  I have both my Phenom and Unleashed drilled under (recommended by Del) for my game and it's worked very well so far.  Only time I'll place the pin over the fingers is if I want more length(med to med hard) and that seems to help on med to drier conditions.  Keep in mind, I'm slower then most players so my game becomes more succeptable to O/U, pin placements become more crucial.  Just my thoughts.....

The finger line defined by them was.......the middle of the finger hole. So a pin in the finger would be right on the line.
