Animal layout
« on: July 14, 2005, 05:00:36 AM »
Drilling an Animal soon (hopefully tonight) and was thinking of trying this layout.  Pin under bridge, MB kicked out towards VAL, cover to 2000 grit Abralon.

In theory, this would provide this type of reaction.  Putting the pin under the bridge (approximately 6" from my PAP) would provide good length, while putting it under the bridge as opposed to over the bridge would help prevent squirt.  The solid particle shell would make the ball try to roll (which is a good thing!) and kicking the MB out a little towards my VAL would definitely help that.  Taking the cover to 2000 grit Abralon would help delay the roll a little bit (i've found that taking covers to a high-grit Abralon surface helps the ball get length but not increase the snap on the backend...polish gets me length and flip, Abralon gets me length and roll) while the particle shell would definitely let the ball roll.

In theory, this ball would be perfect for the heavier side of mediums (but not quite medium-heavy) with enough roll in the backend to get through carry-down, but not a flip-shape, so it would still be good when the backends are torched (as long as there's still head oil for the particle shell to clear the heads).

I know the Animal is a versatile ball, I'm hoping it's THIS versatile.  Any thoughts from Rick, EX, clint, etc.?

Here we go again...oh well...the Track balls that look pearl, some really aren't. The Animal is one of them. Although it appears to be pearl from the swirls and Clean N Sheen cover and the additive Track uses, it is actually a solid (from my understanding). The Animal dulled down will make it roll sooner than out of box, as I had one 800 grit that was a monster! As for your drilling, I am drilling a GP2 exactly like this, pin under ring/bridge-mass bias kicked out, etc....for pretty much the same reasons you are. I think it will work well for what you are wanting it to...

Andrew,

The Animal is a particle pearl, bud. As for putting the pin 6 inches from your PAP on any Morpheus core, might really sail thru the heads and mids. The cover tweak sounds good, but I would just be a little careful with the pin.

Actually Jeremy,

The Animal IS a Particle Solid, not pearl. We have discussed this many times here and the Track staffers have confirmed that the cover only looks pearl but is actually a solid.

Andrew, as for your suggestion on drill and cover prep. The mb placement is what will define your reaction shape, so kicking it out towards or on your VAL will give you an arcing reaction. I am not too sure on the pin though, lets wait for the experts.

Hey there Drew,

Are you still getting some hand in the ball like we talked before?  If you're still getting some revs on it, I'd suggest placing the mb no further then 3.5 or "you" can still get some serious finish.  Keeping it under 3.5 will help stabilize it some on the back (I'm thinking to offset your revs some).

By placing the pin under, it'll also force the mb down.  Therefore, in order to reach this measurement (< 3.5), the mb may end up on to past val.  My reasoning for this placement is because the spin time on the Animal was pretty high for an oil ball so it does retain its psa very well.

Definitely still gettin' some hand.  It's controlled though, i'm not having to stand 50 or anything, but I can still get up on the ball.    Rick, the 3.5 suggestion, that is from PAP, right?  I don't know what else it could be, but I just wanted to make sure anyways.

Sorry Drew, I did mean 3.5 from pap.  I currently have 3 balls in this position, Freakout, Unleashed and 5.0.  It does offer a smoother and continuous reaction for me but I do still get a strong reaction on the back.  With your added revs, I am just trying to make sure we get the ball started even sooner to give you more of the same "arc" look throughout the lane.

I think i'll try the layout and then play with surface prep, maybe try it at 4000 first, then down to 2000, then maybe even 1000.  Definitely go from there, sounds like a good plan.

If it's anything like the hit of any of the other Track balls I've thrown (and trust me, there's been a LOT), then i'll be VERY happy!  Which reminds me...anybody got a 15# Phenom Unleashed they want to get rid of??
