Rule problem
« on: January 27, 2005, 07:36:56 AM »
Hey I got this Rule, 14#, and used it at 1 house which tends to me on the medium-heavy side and had a spectacular shot with it, I could throw as hard as I wanted and the ball kept coming back to the pocket, just an incredible ball; then I play on another house which is on the medium-dry side and the ball flat-out does not hook it hooks a couple of boards more than my plastic ball.
Could anyone tell me what the heck is going on???!!!!

thanx

The ball is burning up it is not made for that dry a condition, you could put some polish on it and that would probably help a little bit but I would suggest leaving it in the condition its in if you are going to be bowling at both houses, use a different ball for the drier condition

You make it sound like buying a ball is just another thing.    I'm poor and balls here in Canada are mad expensive.  I wish I could just buy whichever ball I wanted or needed

If you dont have any thing else to use at that house, and cant afford a new ball, polish is your best bet. It is, as said, burning up and not meant for stuff that dry.

the other option would be to swing it. keep it in the oil as long as possible, and when it hits the dry it should turn left. may need to slow down your ball speed.

A surface adjustment is the best way to go when buying another ball is not an option. In this case, try some polish. However, just be aware, the house where the ball does hook for you must have some oil to help the ball. So, when you apply polish, the ball may not make enough friction between it and the lane and skate to far for you. Just be careful. I have made a surface adjustment before to make a ball work and when I would use it in another house, the ball no longer worked. Thus the reason why since I have gone on Track's staff I just buy another ball of the same one I am using and drill it the same way but alter the surface. It lets me switch back and forth VERY easily where before, when I was in your situation, it is a tough choice.

Good luck!

a 316,

What you need to do is decide which condition you really got the Rule for. Did you get it more for the heavy oil house or for the dry house? If you got it for the heavy oil house then it is doing its job, if you got it more for the dry house then just adjust the coverstock accordingly.

Hey a_j316,

The Rule is designed for med/heavy conditions so that's why it worked better for you on that type of condition.  If we could have "one" ball that would work on med/heavy and then med/dry, that would be ideal but it doesn't work that way.

Here's a brief explanation, a bowling ball creates a certain amount of friction on the lane as it rolls.  Let's compare this to a football player's cleats from 1 inch, 3/4, 1/2, down to nubs and gym shoes.  His 1 inch cleat works fine in mud to create a required amount of friction but he can't use this on astroturf, correct?  He'll have to switch to nubs or maybe gym shoes for that condition, same thing applies in bowling.  That's why we have so many bowling balls with different coverstocks to adhere to a particular lane condition to create the desired amount of friction.

Just as Excaliber explained, it's more important for you to decide which condition you will want to use this ball on.  If you polish it, it will probably work better on the med/dry condition but now it may not work as well on your med/heavy condition.  Hope this helps explain some..
