"OLD" Myths
« on: June 29, 2006, 12:14:04 PM »
NO...I am not talking about Rick!

This is a topic that should be in the Misc. Bowling Forum....HOWEVER since we all know that The Track Forum is the best I figured I would post it here:

Every single one of us have heard a MYTH about bowling. It could be something that was true in the past...but today isn't. So what I want you to do is list something you hear around the bowling center that really just isn't true in TODAY'S game.

I will kick it off with "I dropped my shoulder"

This statement in today's game is actually a good thing. In order to have the ball in the leverage position through your backswing and follow through the bowling shoulder almost has to be lower (or dropped). You want the ball ball under your head when you are bringing it forward...it helps to see your target from essentially the same line as the ball does.....AND it helps tremendously with balance.

YOUR TURN!!

I hit my ankle which in turn made the ball
go right into the gutter. But we all know
one just threw a horrible shot and will
not own up to it.

Old myth huh?...I can't WAIT till Nats in Reno!..

I have 2...

1) Learned to keep your trailing leg in line vertically with your body.  Since the evolution of the power game, our trailing leg should be pushed to the side of our body for proper leverage and power.

This was also tough to do for some who grew up on overground ball returns because you'd kick the return almost everytime.

2) Footwork/steps used to be taught to be more in a shuffle type fashion.  Today's game has changed to "walking" steps for more power and control.  You'll still see some of the old timers slide their feet thru an approach vs the "heel toe" motion of today.
