Second-shift league now is a THIRD SHIFT!! What to do?!!
« on: December 19, 2006, 06:49:50 AM »
Hey fellas,

My second-shift league has turned into a third-shift due to high-school matches in the early afternoon.  Now, they oil the lanes (AMF synthetics), HS bowlers are the first shift, low average bowlers are on the second shift, and now my classic league is on the third shift. I'm having trouble figuring how the lanes transitioned during the second shift, and where should I start my first game at, and what ball to use. Has anybody bowled under these conditions? Luckily, I have a 2 week break until my next league session (Xmas, New Year's Day) and would like to figure what to bring and where to start.

In my bag:
Mean Machine
Artillery
Heat Blast
Solution PPEX
Desert (Spares)

My driller is giving away some equipment (Equation, Power Machine)

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I would Complain....lol

I would not bring my stringer stuff as the lanes will be well used.

Bring something that works good in carrydown your artillery(spelling) might working depending on how its drilled. I would bring the Heat solution and desert along with the ball for carrydown.

What the lanes will probably be like due to HS bowlers there will be an oil push they likely will  be playing cross lane as most young bowlers do on THS. then the low AVG bowlers will likely play up the Outside. So the outside will be light and carried down and the insides will possibly a wet/dry so you will have to make good shots.

These are just speculations on the oil transitions as I haven't seen the bowlers

A lower flaring particle ball could do the trick.

You will probably def. need to bring some low end and controllable equipment. Every week it's going to start and end different, in my experience on synthetics, every pair plays different with bowlers in front of you.  This will def. test your ability to make adjustments, but look at it this way, it's going to make you a better bowler .....well if you don't go nuts, lol....jk

I would use strong, polished equipment drilled with long pin-to-PAP distances.  Stand all the way left and don't get the ball out to the track unless it is REAL late down the lane.  Odds are you'll see carrydown inside, hence the strong, possibly particle pearl ball.  The track will no doubt be fried and ANY ball is going to hook the second you cross 10.  Weak, reactive balls don't carry very well for me when I play that far in.  If you can't move any further left, or they oil too short to get hold inside, I have gone straight down 10 with plastic with some success.  I would also recommend shooting all spares with plastic because odds are backend reaction will be iffy when crossing over.

I would get a high rg ball[2.60] with a low diff.[.30] have it drilled weak.Throw hard at the 8 board, this should take care of your problem.

I don't know much about the Desert but if it is like the rest of Tracks stuff it is to much ball.

LOL! Welcome to my world Buck!

I used to bowl in a 3rd shift before and it was hell every freaking week. Every week is different condition on Brunswick synthetics lanes. You need to come in early and watch the secound shift play their line. Most of the time, there will be carrydown and dry midlane. The best ball I recommend is the Derest Heat and the Solution PPEX. And play it down and in shot. You might start off with the Artillery and Heat Blast to see how the lane react for the 1st game. 3rd shift is where the Desert Heat really shine.

Good Luck.....

Pin positions affect flare, and flare affects friction, and then friction affects ball reaction.

lol..alright...alright...had to clean up first, Xmas was at my house...  (4 kids and spouses and 4 grandkids..Whew!)  Great time though, would never trade it for anything in the world.

Okay Buck, depending upon how much oil you still have after the "storm", I actually like one of the suggestions made by absolutebowling.  I'm in a 9pm league which gets real spotty with a bunch of carrydown.  Even though the heads are dry, the backends are virtually non-existent.  The weaker performance balls can skid better through the fronts but aren't strong enough to eat thru the carrydown down lane.

For this, I ended up drilling one of my Solutions PP (purple) with the pin over mid to help push thru the fronts but have enough cover strength to recover and hook on the backend.  I feel some bowlers could utilize this combo (strong cover, weak pin) due to the thickness of oils we see today.  All we have to do is to match the right cover and ball strength to the amount of oil that we are still encountering.

Keep in mind, we get reaction typically when we encounter friction, correct?  What happens when we don't have any friction down lane?  We need to "overpower" the condition with coverstock or ball strength so we can still get the necessary hitting power to carry.

There are basically 2 ways to "score" on a condition, either we can "feed" the lane or condition (Earl Anthony) or we can "overpower" (Sean Rash, Big Wes, any speed and strong rev combo..etc).  By utilizing the stronger covers on this type of condition, we are actually giving ourselves the capability of "overpowering" a condition without having the physical game to do so.

I'd be complaining but I would try to find an Older ball maybe 5-6 years old doesn't have ot be new or anything the older gear gets down the lane better I use this tactic on Thursday nights I am bowling at a new house and the shot is real tough and it breaks down mad fast. Also try this drill pattern: Pin under fingers and off to the right and the thumb hole OVER the Mass bias. this creates a nice gentle move on the backend the PAP will be closer to the finger holes and the ball will flare a little less on the dry creating a easier reaction to handle down the lane
