Battling over/under with Track...
« on: January 12, 2007, 08:48:08 PM »
Hello all.  I was just wondering how you guys battle over/under conditions with your balls.  Last night, I shot my lowest score in a long time.  Nothing was working for me out of my whole arsenal.  Balls wouldn't come back, balls would hook up too soon, some would hit the pocket with no power creating hazardous splits.

Can I attribute this to most of my arsenal being polished?  Would dulling my balls down give me a better overall control over my equipment?  As I bowl more and more, Im finding that skid/snap equipment (equation/power machine) gives me a bit of trouble in tough conditions than arcy and smooth equipment (Heat Blast/Meaney).

I nearly cried last night because I, for the life of me, couldnt go 2-3 frames without an ugly split of some sort.  To give you a better picture...5 big fours, 3 7-10s, a couple churches and 3 pin splits.  I nearly quit bowling..lol

Noy,i'm battling the same thing right now! In talking with Clint Daley, he suggested that i try to throw a dull surface particle(not pearlized)and see what happens! Thurs. night i threw my Robo Rule for the first two games and shot 256-223 then switched to my Mean Machine for the third game and shot 196 for my best set of the year so far! Battling over /under has really hurt my game the past 2 years and if you find anything else that works, please let me know and i'll do the same! Hopefully Rick,Carl and the rest of the forum can let us know what to try!

When I encounter over/under, its caused (when I was able to bowl right handed) from me being speed dominant. Yours may be a different reason, but to resolve this issue, I tried to stick to a dull cover. That helped me get the ball into a roll quicker. Plus, I always tended to look towards particle, which also helps get the ball started sooner...by trying to get the ball started sooner, it helped smooth out the backend and allowed me to play in the oil a tisker more, both of which help me stop the over under I was used to seeing!

I find that when I am battling over/under on a THS it is more a product of the condition (block) and the line I am playing than the ball. As in I am playing too close to the oil line.
What works best for me when I encounter this is to either move in and soften my speed or move out and raise my speed with the same ball. The stronger more even rolling ball works well also but for me I get a lot of flat tens with that strategy. I just hate leaving flat tens so I stick with the line & speed changes which are more prone to 4s and 9s for me.

With the list of splits you give it just looks like you were diving through the nose most of the night.  And with the 7-10's the ball finished hooking before it got to the pocket.  Much of these splits come from trying to use too much angle downlane with too strong of a ball, usually too shiny of a ball.  That's where the dull and particle balls come in.  They may require a deeper line to the pocket but will smooth out the mystical snap some pearl balls can give.  Or try a much weaker ball much straighter as another option.

I combat over/under with a smoother surface....not dull, but usually 2000 abralon works great!

Carl, my Mean Machine is at 4000 abralon per Del and i'm still getting a ton of over/under with it. On our house shot, if i get the ball to around 7 it jumps hard ,but if i don't get it out there i'll leave 7 pins and 10 pins all night!I'm not the world's best bowler, but this is the first year that i haven't been able to average 200.I don't think it's that i don't have the right equipment for the shot as i have just about all the latest Track line(Equation,Mean,Robo,Artillery,etc.). I'm just getting tired of not being able to score with any consistency! I am just about ready to quit this stupid sport and unlike Noy, i'm not lol!!

Over/under makes for difficult bowling for most. It is actually a good thing because it presents a challenge. Keep your cool and toy with different ideas!

Inertia 1000 or 2000 abralon.  Normally 1st ball out of the bag to calm down back ends.  Depending on how lanes play....next is Jinx OOB pin under bridge 45 deg. or HyJinx OOB pin over bridge 60 deg.  Play with my hand/release for what's needed.
