Drilling my Desert and Blue...
« on: July 05, 2005, 11:27:26 PM »
Ok, my Desert and Blue should be here by week's end. Now for the fun part. I need to figure out how to drill them to perform on what they were designed for. First the Desert. Obviously I will be using this on drier conditions. I was thinking pin over bridge cg in palm. That way the ball would get good length and have a nice controlled backend. Something for me to square up and play the track area with.

As for the Blue, maybe pin below or beside ring to get it started earlier and then stack the cg below or shift it just right of grip center. Not really sure on this one. I assume the Blue will be weaker than my 5.o by nature so I will be looking to put the Blue in that slot. Any recommendations??

BTW, I havent received my 5.0 yet, but that should be here friday. I need to know how to drill that to fit under my GP2. Clint, Ex, Rick, Achappy etc....

Anyone?!?

Rock,

The 5.0 is naturally going to get more length, from the pearl and the GOO LS base used in the cover. Unless you really drill it strong, you should see more length and a little more backend out of the 5.0 compared to the GP2.

As for the Desert, with how weak that ball is, I would say your idea is pretty good...it will go LONG, which is what you want!

As for the Blue, I am going to steal a phrase here and say apply your favorite drilling to it. The Blue is even and from what I have heard, is a pretty decent ball that fits right under the Aggressive.

Clint, the thing I am having a hard time with is I almost feel that there is a gap. I have the GP2 for heavy, then the 5.0, then the Blue Heat. Do you think there is a gap there where I need to add the Aggressive?? I could always take one of my other balls and take the cover down a bit. Like the Mutant Mania for example. I know you guys havent thrown it, but its a pretty aggressive ball. The core gives a smooth, early rolling reaction. Especially since the drill I have on it causes it to roll early as well. It has the Sheer Havoc cover which I could take down to 600 to handle more oil if needed. Your thoughts.

Rock,

With the GP2, Blue Heat and 5.0 you should be fine. I don't think you will have a huge gap there.

With their oob finishes the Blue Heat(I believe 1200 smooth) is going to roll much sooner than the 5.0(Clean n Sheen, aka 1000 grit compound). With the compound finish the 5.0 is going to handle is share of oil, but you will get of its reaction in the later part of the lane. I would drill the Blue Heat with smoother layout, because that is going to be the reaction you get out of it.....just expect early and strong.

I think the layout you have chosen for the Desert is perfect.

The layout for the 5.0----------I would drill it similiar to the Mutant Mania------but if you have worries about it being too strong drilled that way then maybe bring the MB 1 1/2- 2 inches inside of your VAL.

Ok, so if I drill the Blue with a smoother layout, maybe a pin under ring, cg in palm type of layout would be good?? If not, what do you recommend?

I agree with Ex and Clint, I don't think You will have a big gap with these balls. I like the pin under ring finger drill and you could do either a cg in palm or swing the cg about two inches and put a hole in it for more midlane roll and a little more arch.

Clint, my 5.0 suprised me to!

I didn't think it would quite have the hook rating listed but IT DOES. I drilled mine the last week of League and I was standing in front of the ball return playing 30 to 5 and shot 780 on a tough shot.

Hey Rock,

Same thoughts here, there's not really a gap with the GP, Blue and 5.0.  The layouts also sound fine because the Blue is smooth.  The Blue Heat OOB does have very good friction and roll.  If you drill the Desert like that, it "will" go pretty long and even and can be used for true drier conditions.  The 5.0 isn't very early for me but it is very angular which is why we end up covering so many boards in total.  Once this ball encounters friction look out!  Nice set up bud....
