so how was the phenom for you?.

I picked up an inertia for med-oil with spotty backends and I love the reaction I get.now I picked up a phenom but have'nt tried it yet.just wondering what you guys liked/disliked about it?what type of oil did it work best on?etc.etc.the one thing I like about my inertia is that it winds up fast and really reads well.

I actually love it.  To this day, I have my highest series with that ball (796).  I recently had it completely resurfaced, and had my finger grips replaced.  I prefer to use it on shots that have more oil than I'm used to.  Even with 4000 abralon with polish, it gives me a long, smooth arc.  Other than my Power Machine, its my most consistent, go to ball.

I picked up a used one earlier this year but just got around to trying it out this week, so this is my initial impression.  Have to agree with Xcessive Evil in that the ball has a nice smooth continuous arc.  

I first tried it with the surface as I got it - dont know what it was other than a bit dull.  I thought the ball was reacting a bit too early so I thought I would put it at 2000 Abralon with polish and see what it would do.  It made the ball go a bit longer, but it still did not snap at the backend, it remained an even arcing ball, just a few feet later than before.  Kept leaving corner pins, possibly because of low entry angle, so I moved right to play more up the first arrow and the Phenom started to carry nicely.

I just checked and found out that this ball OOB is a particle shell at 1500 smooth with Magic Shine so I may have it close to that now. I will continue to play with it for a bit longer and see what happens.  It is described as a Strong Arc and that seems to be what I saw with its original surface.

i dont know about the phenom but i still use my unleashed it carries very well on the right shot. i love it when i can use it. I shot 300 with mine last year. it really is a good ball

Actually, it's just 1500-grit sanded, no polish.  A buddy of mine has one and it definitely started life dull (1500-grit isn't exactly dull, but it's not polished).

From what I've seen, for a high-load particle ball for heavy oil, it's got a very strong arc in the backend.

Still my no.1 oiler when i go on the road. Havent had a chance to compare it to my Robo Rule on the soup yet. Compared to my Arsenal Aggressive its more even at the breakpoint but seems to cover more boards(layout prob has a bit to do with that too)

My bad, I got the Magic Shine from the description on this site in the Reviews section, but didnt notice that it says 'Recommended polish', not that it came that way.  Mine was dull when I got it, but since it was used, I did not know if that was OOB.

The Phenom was a very good ball in its time. I prefer the Animal on oil, but the Phenom was not too far behind.

well I got two shots with mine the other night.first two pitches were very smooth rolling arcs into the pocket for strikes then burn city,not enough oil. at least I saw enough to warrent new grips and a thumb slug.

The Phenom was a piece of garbage for me.  I couldn't get the ball make any kind of positive move (it backed up pretty good, though).  I finally got it to hook using basically a full roller layout.  Only problem was that it rolled over the thumb hole and jumped up in the air just before it hit the pins.  (Actually, the carry was pretty impressive when it hit the pocket in the air....)  Finally gave up and just left it on the floor of my neighborhood pro shop.  What a POS...!

Sorry for the hijack. Bob the layout was probly way off for you. Considering that you have suck a lower rev rate you may have wanted to get something where the layout had the pin closer to your pap so it would roll up faster. It may have also helped if the cover was at a lower grit then you had it (if you didnt change it).

You may be right.  On the other hand, tenpinspro did the drilling (both the original layout and subsequent changes) and the layout came from Brian Pursell....  We experimented with a lot of different ideas and not even Rick could get this POS to work in my hands.  I think we finally came to the conclusion that the Phenom is a bad match up for me and that I don't have enough hand to make it work.

I had mixed success with my Phenom. At first, it was a nice ball, doing as it was supposed to. But it seemed to burn out quickly, and I had to get another ball quickly as it lost it's will to do anything. Now it sits in my garage. It worked best for me on med oil.
