Something New
« on: November 30, 2004, 11:44:23 PM »
After joining a new league in a different center. I realize that I may need
a ball for heavy oil. In my other league I've had much success with a Flash
Point. This league I used a polished Super Charge and it wasn't even close to be enough ball. So, I guess I'm looking for something that would be a step up from the Super Charge. About me and the lanes/center:
Right handed, tweener with above average revs. Normal ball speed is around 17mph. Prefer to play deep inside, but can be versatile. My PAP is 4 5/16 over and 1/4 up. I have a low track. I average around 210-215 consistently. I'd like to go to more of a Track Arsenal. Currently use: Flash Point 5*5, Super Charge 2.5*4, Tour Power 3*5.5. Pearl Beast 3*3.

Let me know any suggestions as I'm skitish about getting really strong equipment. I've had a Cherry Bomb, X Factor, Silencer, Chaos, and others that I rarely used because I get so much hand in the ball. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Hey Brian,

Something sounds a little strange in your request.  In regards to the balls you classified as "too strong", have you tried any of those on this shot?  If guys are throwing the hook monsters you mentioned, your stronger balls should be okay if you have a lot of turn as well.  IMHO, the Cherry Bomb, X-Factor or Silencer are just a step up from your Super Charge.  Not sure if you still have these or not, just checking.

If not, I'd go with what Ex suggests as well in regards to the Rule.  You can also drill it a little more stable to offset some of your turn.  The Xception is also a very good choice as both balls offer great strength but very controlled, not like typical resin.  Both of mine drilled in a strong position give me a very strong arc and I have a no speed with high tilt which translates typically into O/U on every shot almost...hope this helps some.

Rick,
As it turns out, I do not have any of those balls anymore. I gave away nearly all of my equipment when I started working the hours that I currently do. Now, I have time and more importantly the desire to bowl again. I'm down to either a Rule (which I've wanted since it came out) or a WMB. I haven't needed a true heavy oil ball in a long time. I'll probably get both. Try them and report which is better. Here, in Lynchburg, my new shop guy is a Track Pro Staff memeber, I believe. Chuck sends him every new ball that comes out. So, if he's not on staff, he's got friends in high places. I actually bowled in a league with Chuck Gardner when I lived in Virginia Beach. FWIW, I've been told by many a person that I don't give myself enough credit for how much turn I put on a bowling ball. I typically have more success with the lower end stuff.
I'm excited about a new oil pattern, lane surface, challenge. I'm bowling better, while my timing and balance are nearly 100% from two years ago when I left. I don't know how much tilt I have other than my PAP measurements. I have grown to like rolling the ball faster (PAP 4 5/16 over and 1/4 up). Can you determine how much tilt that will equate to? Do I need to video tape myself and upload it to the site? LMK, and HUGH THANKS to ALL!!!!

Hey Brian,

Typically this isn't much tilt (1/4 up), if you get a chance, the vid would be very helpful as well.  I still like the Xception for you based on what you're describing, with some hand, this ball does turn pretty well but the polished cover won't make you stand up at the arrows.

Rick,
Thanks. I was under the impression that I get a lot of axis tilt due to my lower track. Guess not. I'm having a hard time deciding between an EXception and A rule.

My Rule is waiting to be punched right now!

Have to decide how to lay it out.

FWIW, my driller uses a Rule for this shot and takes a burgundy scotch brite to it before each session in this center. Any suggestions. I like how my Flash point rolls in the other center with less oil. It's drilled 5*5. My specs are in my profile.

Christmas came early this year!!!

Oh wait my girlfriend wants to get me an Exception...... I must have made the "nice" list this year.

Good for you Brian, (yes, I saw your name on the "nice" list)

If you're still worried about the Rule being too strong, I'd go with what Ex recommended in placing the mb in a weaker positioning (about 5-6 inches from pap).  By doing this, you can still have the strength of the Goo coverstock without the ball being overly aggressive for your game.  Hope this helps...
