How does span length affect your layout?

For example, I have a shorter span (3 50/64 x 3 48/64 cut to cut). My axis point is at 4 3/4" over and 1 3/8" up. My ball speed is 17 mph, with medium revs, with 10-17 degrees of tilt.

With such a large vertical component in my axis location and a short span, will all of my layouts be over the fingers?

What pin to PAP distance should I use for length/snap layouts and/or control layouts?

Use same distances as others do!

We have a guy I have bowled with about a 4 inch pin to pap.

We always try to get him over near middle finger for later parts of tourneys.

He always does well early in tourneys and then falls apart and loses carry in later parts.(we never can get him to the mid finger area).

He starts with balls drilled near ring(looks like other bowlers layouts) ...qualifies high.

Gets beat by carry in any subsequent rounds usually and then comes back and complains and says winner had a ball drilled right near ring.

He doesn't get it!

His balls are burning up with teh 3 inch pin to pap and 2 1/2 inch pin to pap he lays everything out! Because he wants his ball to look like everyone else!

It's sort of funny now after 5 years...same story everytime...we smile nod and chuckle and have a beer and enjoy the weekly/monthly saga of woe.

Chuck,

Your span is not going to limit your layouts very much. You definately will not need to have all of your pins above the fingers.

For length/snap you would want to be in the 4 3/4 range from PAP with the pin, and control layouts......that can vary. By control do you mean smooth or do you mean NON violent backend? For control you can have your pin at 2 1/2 from PAP, or you could even have it further than 4 3/4 from PAP. Really depends on what you are looking for.

PS- the only thing that you will really need to do....if you get a ball that you know you are going to want drilled with the pin under the finger line you may want to stay with shorter pin distances to CG. Other than that, you are safe.

Hey Chuck, span length doesn't really affect a layout. However, it may be disputed if an improper span is used (too long or short) can cause for a different hand release which then changes the type of roll you place on the ball and that in turn changes your overall reaction. This also means the current layout on the ball may not necessairly have the same effect between the different releases.

No not necessarily, Excaliber covered this pretty well and I agree. Also agree with Ex's layout suggestions...
