Stone 8s
« on: June 10, 2006, 01:24:06 AM »
Anyone else ever go through a period of leaving more stone 8's than normal.
I have left at least one per game over my last 6 games of league.
It is getting aggravating, but at least I am in the pocket.

Hey Sean,

Started summer league at this different center and they just recently acquired a new Kegel which lays down an incredible over/under wall.  The free hook to the right is super strong so I've been stoning 9's at this house or tug in the oil for 10's or rip 7-10's.  Wondering if your experiencing possibly the same thing?  Has anything changed in their oiling pattern lately?

Rick
Actually we just got new Kustodian IONs at both centers but I don't think that is the cause. Reason being is one is a sport shot on synthetics and the other is a THS on wood. I am just chalking it up to bad luck cause all of the shots have looked perfect other than the 8.
I was thinking that maybe it was caused by burning off a touch too much energy before getting to the pocket even though the balls have driven straight back through the 3,5,9 on each shot.
The reason I was thinking that is cause from what I have seen on video a stone 8 is caused by the 1 pin ricocheting of the 2 and hitting the 5 just before the ball does. I figure if the ball has just a touch more energy left it will beat the 1 to the punch. Another reason is on the THS it has been my Machine which reads a touch early and my Robo on the sport shot which also reads a touch early.

The 8 pin used to be considered as the only true tap for a righty before but with today's equipment, I have to change my beliefs some on that.  I also still study and watch a lot of vids and I'd agree to a point that the stone 8 today is a ball that enters very strong but then deflects at the last second causing it to follow the 5 straight back vs how we want balls to split the 8-9 as it leaves the deck these days (hence the teaching of "exit" angle).  I learned this from Purcell in the past and then I saw KOTM refer to it as well.  Splitting the 8-9 today still takes a lot of finish but as strong as our equipment is now, it happens much more frequently then in the past.

Back to the 8 pin, I'd say if the ball were to drive into the pins just a hair weaker, you're fine because it would then take it's normal course of hitting the 1,3,5,9 in the proper angle. On the other hand, if it were to continue motion with a stronger finish, it would split the 8-9.  My vids on the Delta 1 (in my profile) do this almost everytime.

I left more stone 9's (lefty) this year than ever before in my life...and they always seem to come at crucial times as well.

I'm sure there's more than one way to leave it, but I've seen a lot of slow motion replays where the ball just deflects so little when it hits the pocket that it drives the five straight back. Normally the ball would deflect enough on entering the pocket to hit the five pin right of its center which then sends it into the eight.

Hence the phrase..."Too much ball." Always sounds strange but it's still accurate.

Lol... I know what you mean Sean. One bad example for me was last year. I went X 9/ X 9/ 9/ 9/ X X X X X X. ALL the 9/ were 8 pins lol. Yes I left 3 in a row! I had my pinky open and in the 6th frame closed it. Seemed to carry the 8 a little better. I was pissed after that game.

Well rick what is my problem. I leave about 3 stone 9 pins a game. LOL. I am right handed. I think it is because I have to much drive. I want your Opinion on this matter. Just at the last tournament in singles the one game I left 5 in a row. LOL so give me some advise.

Hey scoot, I actually move and recommend moving 1-2 boards left with my feet but hold the target if I leave a 9 pin.  Based on the normal theory of a ball hitting the pocket (for RH) 1,3 then driving thru into the 5 and deflecting off into the 9, for us to leave a solid 9 means it is driving so hard with so much angle that it drives thru the 5 and "does not deflect" but instead continues thru the 5 into the 8 pin and past the 9, hence leaving the 9 pin.

Basically a 9 pin does mean it was "too" strong so we do want or need to create some deflection.

My adjustment of the 1-2 boards is a standard for avg tweeners.  If you are a stronger tweener to cranker, you may have to do a 1 and 1 or 2 and 1 (adjust feet and target).  Conversely, if you're more of a stroker, you may only need to adjust by 1/2 to 1 board on the approach.  Hope this helps buddy....
