The 8 pin used to be considered as the only true tap for a righty before but with today's equipment, I have to change my beliefs some on that. I also still study and watch a lot of vids and I'd agree to a point that the stone 8 today is a ball that enters very strong but then deflects at the last second causing it to follow the 5 straight back vs how we want balls to split the 8-9 as it leaves the deck these days (hence the teaching of "exit" angle). I learned this from Purcell in the past and then I saw KOTM refer to it as well. Splitting the 8-9 today still takes a lot of finish but as strong as our equipment is now, it happens much more frequently then in the past.
Back to the 8 pin, I'd say if the ball were to drive into the pins just a hair weaker, you're fine because it would then take it's normal course of hitting the 1,3,5,9 in the proper angle. On the other hand, if it were to continue motion with a stronger finish, it would split the 8-9. My vids on the Delta 1 (in my profile) do this almost everytime.
