Surface of ball under a polish
« on: March 03, 2005, 03:15:09 PM »
What effect does sanded a ball to 600 grit or 400 grit have when u then polish it up... What is the diff between the two grits under a polish???

frockc,

The lower the grit the sooner the ball will want to roll up, having polish over top of the sanded area just allows the ball to get down the lane more. If you feel you need an earlier read on the lane, but also need strong backend sanding and then polishing is not a bad way to go.

Often the smooth finish that ball companies put on bowling balls is not enough for a bowler. So the bowler will sand the ball down and put a slight polish on it in order to get the ball to read the lane sooner, but the polish also allows the ball to be stronger at the breakpoint.

Hey frock,

There may not be a big noticeable difference between 400 and 600 under a polish but 600 to a 1000 is a big difference.  The rougher we have a surface under a polish, the more a ball will grab in comparison to having the cover fined to say 1000 and then polished.

My Haus machine has 2 grits of sanding that help prep a ball for polishing(burg and gray pad).  There is a noticeable difference if I do not use the finer gray pad before trying to polish a ball.  I have a few friends in the automotive repair business and I see a high similarity in their surface prep of a car before applying primer/paint.  Hope this helps some...

PS. I also agree with what Ex stated in reaction.
