Surprised no one has mentioned this, cause it was on tv.
« on: April 10, 2006, 07:23:33 PM »
Mitch Besley. He was mentioned on the telecast this weekend, he earned exemption on the Denny's PBA Tour and is defering it until 2007 to serve in the military. Surprised your not all glowing with pride in him.

I am not a huge supporter but i would be proud of someone to put aside a life time dream to support his country's military efforts.

this is being mentioned here because he is a track staffer i believe.

I know he posts on here infrequently.

Hey Dude,

I heard it on TV but wasn't sure if I heard the name right, thanks for confirming it! I think it is wonderful how patriotic the guy is for doing just that! I support all members of the military and I want them home as soon as possible as well! God Bless You Dude and everyone in the military! Have a great week!

I am lucky enough to know Mitch and have had the priviledge of getting my butt kicked by him...*laugh*..

Mitch is a great guy, a great bowler and will be an awesome representative for Track and for the US Air Force/Military....

Speaking of Military Bowlers...(Air Force bowlers of course...)....we have Ben Laughlin (former AF type) and Mitch on or going on tour and on Team USA we have Marty Bedford.  No wonder AF bowling kicks butt...;-)

May all our troops return safe when their job is done!

See you Mitch in 2007-2008

It was mentioned on TV the extra spot will come from the Tour Trials, just like when Delutz took off last year, they added the extra spot at the Trials then as well.....

Not to take away from what he's doing, but he's not exactly giving much up.  He's not giving up his exemption, he's just deferring it.  I would be quite a lot more impressed if the PBA had decided that he couldn't keep his exemption, and made it an "us or them" thing.

Note, I don't think that would have been right for the PBA to do, and there are a lot of rules about what you can do job-wise to people who are in military service.  But if, say, Jeff Carter said "no, I'd like to defer my exemption because I'd rather keep my day job for one more year", they'd've laughed at him.

"US or them" would be BAD pub for the PBA versus the military  ... and an idiotic idea to boot, IMHO !!!

BTW ... I bowled against Mitch when we we both stationed in Europe in the early '90s; lots of raw talent back then and he has exceeded my expectations !!!
Best of luck, Mitch !!! And we look forward to seeing you in a few TV appearance in the future !!!

Wow!!  I heard that someone was going to the military for a year, but didn't know they were talking about Mitch.  <I missed the name>  Mitch is a great bowler and a heck of a person and I think all of us will commend him on doing what he knows and we know that is correct.

None of that has anything to do with anything.  I know nothing about Mitch, never met him, never seen him bowl.  I disagree with some of the things the PBA has done, but I have nothing against them (and I watch them religiously every Sunday and tape most of the shows during the week).

My point was that he hasn't lost anything.  Be proud of him for serving his country, if you like.  Diss him because he's party of the military and you don't like the war, if you like.  But to say he's put aside a lifetime dream is a bit excessive.  He's not putting aside anything, it'll be there for him when he gets back.

Now, if he doesn't come back (and I hope every single one of the troops does come back) or if he's injured in a career-ending way, that will be a tragedy.  But I don't think he has much choice about deferring his exemption.  His service is set, I don't think he can just decide to quit.

Just a Note on someone putting their Dream on Hold statement that TheDude made... I respect Mitch for his military career but in reality he had no choice if he is getting shipped out to active/overseas service in most all cases. But I wish him safety and security in his job and look forward to seeing him on tour in 2007-2008 I hear he can throw it!!!

Mitch is a great guy and an incredible bowler. I've known him since 1995 when we were stationed together early in my career and talk to him pretty regularly. I will not put his business all over the board as that is not my place however, I will tell you this much. Most people do not realize that Mitch has been on Active duty since day one of his professional career! This should give you a little insight as to the talent and dedication that he possesses. He has managed to accomplish this all while deploying and going on various other Temporary Duty assignments. Mitch helped me out during a real tough time in my life and when my so called "friends" disappeared, he stood fast and helped me more than he probably ever will realize. He's a great representative of the United States Air Force and well an asset to the PBA tour. Best of luck to you next year bro!
