Rick,
I'll get the ball rolling on this one! Actually,I already did on a previous post about CG PRO SHOP-CARL. Carl has given me alot of answers over the last month,Including some actual coaching at West Side Lanes in Youngstown,Ohio! I was having a terrible time with over/under ball reaction on my THS and didn't know whether it was my game or my equipment! Icontacted Carl and he suggested getting together so he could look at me game and equipment, so I went to Youngstown(which is about an 1 1/2 hr. drive). Carl looked at my game and equipment and made some suggestions. I was spinning the ball like a top(high tilt & rotation),so the ball was jumping off the friction zone very hard! He worked on my form wirth some release suggestions and gave me a grip to try(which included longer spans and different pitches in the fingers and thumb to try to alter me getting around the ball so hard and quickly)! The changes worked great as now I have tons more roll and less tilt,(although he showed me how to use the previous release to my advantage). Two months ago, I was ready to hang it up as it was no longer fun, but work trying to score,Now,I'm back to having some fun with the game and am working harder to get my game back where it used to be! Anyone who has dealt with Carl will appreciate his honesty and PATIENCE(ESPECIALLY WITH ME RIGHT NOW, as I'm asking question after question by pm)! If you need or want some help with your game, by all means give Carl and /or Rick a call! They'll do what they can to help!!

To Rick and Carl,

The biggest help of all is that you guys became wonderful friends of mine...that is first and foremost!

Rick helped me understand stuff even further with his analogies during the many conversations we had over the phone...

I use these analogies with my customers who are attempting to understand bowling balls and difference between each and every one of them. The 'snow tire' analogy has been the best one and I have used this one many times...

Finally, as John said...there is way too much to describe in a reply to the topic on how you and Carl have been a tremendous influence on us all...

God Bless You guys and to each and everyone of you as well! Have a great week!

I agree, there are too many things to list.  But they have given me the most help in discussions of surfaces on my equipment, and my biggest issue of having different axis tilts for my THS league, and PBA experience league.  I'm sure I'll be bugging them again soon. lol

Rick and Carl have helped me understand the importance of ball layout and surface prep for the many different lane conditions I face in my league and tournament bowling. We've been able to experiment through the years based on my ball speed, axis tilt and low track with certain pin placements so that I can perform better on tougher conditions. They've been open, honest and always there to help me- and yet neither one has ever seen me bowl before...

Thank you very much- keep up the Tag Team coaching support, I feel like I wouldn't have the consistency that I have without your help.

Rick gave me a layout for my Machine and i did really well with the ball, Carl gave me a layout for my Phoenix and im LOVING it so far. Thats not counting the posts of theirs that have helped my game and understanding of layouts and other stuff not directly to me but for others on here, but they have helped my game and knowledge also, not sure i would still be with Track if it werent for you 2.

Thanks for all that you 2 do for us trying to learn the game, it means alot to everyone here.

To all whom it may concern,

I have had the pleasure of spending a couple of days on the lanes with Rick as well as countless hours on the phone. Through these conversations I have discovered that Rick has a profound ability to simplify what seems difficult. He does this through various analogies that you would not consider to be bowling related, but when he is done talking a light goes off in your head and it all makes total sense. His knowledge of cause and effect is quite extensive much of which is due to his analytical thought patterns, he is truly one of the wisest and most logical thinking people I have ever met. I feel that some of his best traits are that he looks at things from multiple prospectives and bases many of his teachings on common sense and human nature. For example while he was helping me on the lane he saw that I had thrown a few balls near perfect for what we were trying to accomplish. He came up to me and in affect said to slow down mentally cause human nature makes us want to do more and more, I thought to myself he is reading my mind, I was thinking "hey I threw a few really good shots lets see if I can do a little more and still execute". His methods to coaching are to work with what comes naturally and use those tendencies to achieve the most from your game without trying to turn you into one of the cookie cutter styles. I have terrible foot work in that my steps are quite short and abbreviated but he didn't even mention it on lane cause he saw that I am consistent with it and it works for me in my overall timing.
The main things that he wanted me to key on were:
1. A new address position that allows for a more relaxed hand and forearm due to placing more weight in my non bowling hand.
2. WAIT, WAIT, WAIT, turn. He noticed that when I turned the ball early which is often that I subconsciously knew that I was turning early and would stop my rotation to prevent overturn. When I do this my release angle is constant but it is more of a suitcase type of release cause I don't come around the ball any more after my thumb exits which causes my track to get very close to or thump the thumb. This stop of rotation also causes tension in my hand and forearm which slows down my release.
3. Just be myself don't try to do more than comes natural, stop thinking so much and just feel it.

Rick has also been a big help when asking for a comparison between balls whether they were Track products or other as well as suggestions for layout based on what I wanted the ball to do in relation to another ball that I already had. Each time the result was spot on.

John Jowdy and Jeri Edwards are current getting approximately $570 for 3 days of shared, NOT devoted, one-on-one instruction, in a class of 40 - 45 people?

Don't tell me how different that is from what you got. Tell me how much you paid Rick or Carl.

Rick,

What has it been?  3-4 years?  All started with the infamous "Track Rule" questions ...

Anyways, ever since we've talked (daily basis) about bowling.  Moreso the slump I've been suffering ever since I got married  You've advised some things for me to try.  For the most part, it worked, yet I needed 'another eye' to assure I a) got it right and b) became more consistent.  Frustrating it may be, I was willing to continue working at it but the only true benefit was to have the help in person.  Thus USBC Nats.  Not only did I finally meet Rick, but Carl as well.  Both guys are great as they feed off one another (Rick supplying the food due to his many years of experience).  After Nats., we worked on my game. Though the hour was late (about 3 am ) with the adjustments offered, I was able to see a noticeable improvement.  Not only was I able to properly align myself, but also regain the speed that I had prior to my slump!  I also have to thank him for reslugging my improperly drilled equipment.  If you happen to be a big & strong guy, you know how difficult it can be creating 'feel'.  I learned what it's like.  When you're really struggling with your game, areas of focus tend to wander off what's really important.  I rarely paid attention to this part of the game, as it was mostly 'grip and rip'.

With all that in mind, I returned to NY, eager to practice what I had been shown/taught.  GREAT RESULTS!!!! as it has been quite a while since I've scored so well.  For this I owe them a great deal!.

There are people who have the unknown privilege of living within distance of these two.  For this I envy you.  However, you are really doing yourselves a disservice by not taking advantage of the resources available to you.

If only I wasn't 3,000+ miles away....

Thanks Guys!  You did more than you think!

Vernon

P.S. Hey Rick, pair me up with 'minimum_bob' next year.  He and I gonna WHACK EM!!!  Hey Minimum_Bob ... I'MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKK!!!!

A couple of years ago, I decided to start bowling again after about a 15-year absence.  I was fortunate that Rick's shop is located in the local bowling center.  I stumbled in not really knowing what I wanted, but he spent quite a bit of time explaining how the game and equipment had evolved during my absence.  He has helped me tremendously in improving my understanding of ball technology, layouts, lane conditions, etc. (although I still don't quite fully understand everything).  He has also helped me tremendously with my physical game.  I have been to both Kegel and Super School and both were very valuable experiences.  However, Rick's coaching and feedback have been just as helpful.  My only complaint is that talking ball technology with Rick has gotten me addicted to buying bowling balls.  It now takes me about half a day to decide what equipment to take to a tournament.

Vernon,  I'd be happy to bowl with you, but I'm scared that you'll break my hand with one of your high-fives LOL....  See you in NM.

As has been said before, there isn't enough space here to tell how Rick and Carl have helped me personally, but I'll give a few examples.  Rick gave me a layout suggestion for my Inertia, which I was about ready to pitch and once I had it drilled with his layout, it became my go to ball.  Rick also gave me a timing analogy that helped me tremendously.  His analogies make the technical side of modern equipment so easy to understand.

Carl has given me help on layouts for several balls and is very helpful with surface adjustment suggestions.  I bought a Triple Threat for a second shift league and his recommended layout was absolutely perfect for the condition.  Carl also helped me alot in making sure a Machine that I had purchased was a good candidate for the Leong-Hall drilling.  He answered numerous PMs and I'm grateful.

Thanks guys. I have been experimenting with some other equipment, but their help and support remanins constant. I'm proud to say that I am a Tag Team Coaching success story and forever grateful!

Well when I think how I was affected by Tag Team Coaching. What comes to mind for me is when I first met Carl. I came to watch my brother bowl in a Friday night sweeper. I was about 15ish at the time, I only really knew one thing about the game and that was hook hook hook. I ended up buying my first Track ball through Carl's pro shop after I started working in the back of west side lanes. He ended up redoing my span, and pitches. When I came to Carl my span was as long as his is now. I was 16 at the time and my hand is nowhere near as big as his. My span was about 4 9/16 or longer. We changed my span to where I am now 4 5/16. The biggest thing that Carl fixed on me was that what I thought was revs and going to make a lot of hook was really me just letting go of the ball and spinning the hell out of it off my thumb. Yes I would see a lot of backend reaction but I would always have a huge amount of over under. Carl worked with me on this for almost 2-3 years. He even got so involved with me that he ended up coming to coach my high school team my last two years. I soon started to get better reaction out of the ball. The problems I had with my older stuff like my finger tips having massive brownish yellow burn marks and my shoulder hurting like heck were gone. The span changed helped a lot, to the point to where I wasn't a hit or miss with my games as much. I wouldn't be the guy you know could come out and shoot the big game and then fall off the world. I started to get more and more consistent. The helping of understanding layouts, coverstocks, hand positions and the placement of the ball in my stance helped me to have the confidence to go out for the college team. Thanks in part to everything that Carl showed me I did something that only me and the other kid that same year have done. Be entering freshmen and make the College Men's A team. Yet it was great to have Carl there at home when I hurt myself at the first tournament. I wasn't able to finish the season with the team because of the injury but Carl made a effort to help me work my game around the injury so it didn't happen again. He was there the night I shot my 300, with a ball he drilled and sold me (very very cheap I might say).

Yet through it all the biggest thing he has showed to me is the confidence he has in me. Not many people are as confident in me as Carl. He trust me a lot when it comes to bowling, the pro shop, even his own game at times when he finds himself in a funk.

This is why I am a success story. I truly feel more like a Tag Team Coaching Apprentice. So maybe one day me and one other from this site can be as trust worthy to you guys as Carl and Rick have been.

Hey BR Family,

Well, I don't think there's enough room and space to type how much Rick and Carl have helped me.

Here's a quick timetable:
August 2004 - Buy the last ball I've ever gotten from my old pro shop driller.
October 2004 - Pay a visit to Rick at his shop so he could take a look at my grip. We used to bowl in ABT Masters together back in 96-2000. Haven't seen the guy in years and it was nice that we reunited.

Rick single-handedly improved my game. I was stuck at a 200 average with constant hand pain. He re-did my grip and we tweaked my game a bit. Since my first Visit with Rick, I improved my average and booked 209 (April 2007) at a different house. Thanks for everything Rick and you can also count on him for advice or just friendship alone. He treats everyone like family.

Carl was just as much help. Although we haven't met in person, he always answered my PM's, gave me layout and ball advice. A good guy that is always lending a helping hand.

So that's my Tag Team Coaching story in a nutshell.

These guys are awesome!
Ram
