My Unleashed belongs in a Petting Zoo

After hearing all the stories and hype about the backend of this ball, I decided to pick one up.  I made a trade for an almost brand new 15lb-er.  I plugged up the thumb and redrilled it.  Layout was stacked with mass bias just right of thumb & a small weight hole on axis.  

With the matte factory surface, this ball seemed to "float" through the heads and had a strong arcing backend.... as expected from a matte finish on a normal house shot.  

In an effort to find the "angular" backend that I had heard about, I hit the ball with some ebonite particle polish.  I will admit that it made the ball look pretty (although I always prefer gloss over matte finish).  Unfortunately this polishing seemed to take away any reaction the ball had.  Now the nice "float" through the heads continued 45 ft down the lane.  Backend was weak at best.  I expected more backend by polishing... and ended up with less.  

The only other ball I have ever experienced this with was the Ebonite TPC player.  Matte finish seemed to work wonders, polishing killed all reaction.  As a result, I conclude that my polished Unleashed belongs in a petting zoo  .

What I would suggest is not having the matte finish below the polish, try sanding it down to like 600 or 800 then apply the polish you want. Everyone else that has this ball polished seems to love it. My dad had to take the polish off because it moved too much in the backend. Try adjusting the surface then apply polish, and let us know if that works.

yes..that's a good idea.  Possibly 600-800grit polished should make this ball little stronger.. thanks for the suggestion

Hey Strapper,

On top of what Excaliber recommends, becareful with what type of polish you are using.  This particle polish may be a little thick(not familiar with it) and it may be sealing the coverstock more then others.  The polish that a few of us have used with success has been Track's Magic Shine.  Hope this info helps also...

ok cool... yes, on certain balls, the ebonite polishes tend to "over-do-it" a little.  I'll see what else I have available.

Really?  I wonder who took time to figure that one out... N.S.S.  Track describes this ball (with the box high grit matte finish) to be suited for heavy oil...  

Alright... now for an update.  I hit the unleashed with 800 grit wet sand and applied a light compound buff to give it a little shine.  Practiced tonight on a fresh house shot.  Expecting to "open up the backends" as the Track webpage describes, I threw a couple shots hitting 15 and swinging out to around 10.  Once the ball got to 10... just kept going...about 50ft the ball stopped fading and crushed the 6 pin.  It didn't take me long to decide that wasn't the line to play...  tightened up to playing up 10.  The ball just barely made it to the pocket and hit like a marshmellow.  Playing up 5 the ball would make it to the hole, but would come in behind the head pin and ring 10 pins.  I pulled out my 800 grit polished Khameleon to compare (which is drilled a little weaker), and was forced to bump inside and swing 13 to 8.  The Khameleon hit great...so I ruled out me being weak .

The unleashed is drilled stacked with MB in strong position, but the ball just doesn't seem to do anything for me.  I was under the impression the core was fairly strong, but in the oil I'm only getting a little over an inch of flare...the ball just doesn't seem to do anything.  Track recommends this ball for heavy oil, but I honestly couldn't see using it on anything more than light to medium oil.

I have mine drilled like your Unleashed and it is a controllable ball but the carry is strong. It does not hook a lot but that is how I want it. If you want it to be more aggressive, put your MB near the VAL or in the VAL. I have a friend who drilled his ball like this, pin uder ring and MB about an inch to the left of his VAL and the ball was a hook monster. The MB strong position in the specs for the Unleashed is a misnomer. The real strong position is when the MB is near the VAL. Hope this helps.

I wonder if Track has had some bad cores released?  The Animal seems to be a hook monster or dud for too many people.  Ric Clint? had problems getting the Phenom to do much.  I remember some 16# Storm Responses were recalled for core problems.  I know several people who got them replaced because they would hardly hook, flare, or hit.

Well.. I decided to use the resources offered on Track's website and sent an email asking for technical advise under the "contact us" tab.  Within less than 24 hours (over the weekend nonetheless), I received an email back from Chuck.  Based upon the info I provided (my stats, ball layout, and the problem), I received an informative reply.  Although Chuck wasn't able to pinpoint the exact problem, he made some suggestions and requested some additional info to help me out.  Right now he's leaning towards adjustment of static weights (possibly moving the weight hole), in order to help the ball in the midlane a little more.  I'm willing to give anything a try ..so the advise is welcomed.  I'll let everyone know how it turns out.
