Title: Track 718A vs Hammer Taboo
Post by: kgm32 on January 26, 2011, 11:27:20 AM
I know this is a double post from the Hammer board but I wasn't sure Hammer bowler read the Track board
I currently throw a Motiv Cruel. Looking for a ball to compliment it for lower oil levels especially on wood lanes. I threw both balls recently during a demo day. I shot well with the Taboo (254) and really well with the 718A (278). I wish I had had my other balls with me to compare to them that day on the same lanes. I also have a Ebonite Striking Motion 2.0 that I use now when the oil breaks down but this ball seems to lack back end. I throw a medium speed ball with low to mid revs. While I have read a arc ball is more preferable as it it more controllable as I play primarily and outside in shot is the any advantage of a angular ball vs. a arcing ball? My real concern is that the Taboo is really to similar to the Cruel to bother carrying and the 718A would give me more options but would like others views.
Thanks

I have never thrown Motiv equipment so I can't really compare, but there is a noticable difference between the Taboo and the 718A However, if you would really like to use it for lower oil levels I would go with the 718A with certain caveats. First and foremost, the ball is extremely angular on medium conditions, so I would suggest drilling it with a weaker layout. Second, the balls finishing process stops at 2000 and then polish is thrown on...Personally, I would suggest knocking off the polish, running the ball through the progression, but if you want to really use it on lighter volumes I would finish the ball 2000 - 4000 - 4000 and then put on some polish. It should tame the ball down enough to allow you to still use it on medium conditions and the lighter conditions you want to use it on.
However, if you want a true light oil ball and you like track I'd go out and get a 505A while they are still available as I am not sure when they are scheduled to be discontinued.

Then go with the 718A, cause the Taboo is even stronger than your Cruel...
But I wouldn't call the 718A a ball for lower oil...

I agree with jls. The Taboo will be much stronger overall and the 718A will go sideways off the dry. The 718A will be longer than both the Cruel and the Taboo but not near as controllable. If you're open to other options in Track either the 715C which you can still get will give you a slight step down from your Cruel or the 505T polished will be an great compliment to your Cruel with good control off the dry and with it polished will push it down the lane much further. If you have any other questions about anything in the Track line pm me on here or email me and I'll be glad to help.
