Author Topic: Need help with layout of Rule GP2 (Read 3683 times)

We've ordered a GP2 for a customer. This will be the first ball I've drilled for him, so I don't know his PAP yet, but he's a low 3/4 roller, PAP probably around 4" x 1". Medium revs, 16 mph or so, 200+ average. This will be a good opportunity both for me to get more business from this customer and for Track balls to generally impress our bowlers. We don't sell many Track balls, mostly Ebonite and Storm. I haven't seen the Track drill sheet for asymmetrical cores yet, but I've looked at the layouts available on the Buddies Pro Shop and bowlingballs.com sites. For some reason the sheets on the Track website won't open for me. Anyway, I'm thinking about a 3" pin to PAP with the MB just to the right of the centerline and the pin below the finger holes. I'm looking either for comfirmation of this layout or alternative suggestions. In our brief conversation (he had already selected the ball) he indicated he wants an arcing reaction with some pop on the backend. I'll be drilling the ball tomorrow afternoon, 2/1/05, if it comes in. -- JohnP

The drill sheets are basically the same for the assymetrical balls. They layout you've thought about seems like it will produce a decent arcing motion. I by no means am an expert or anything of the sort, but I think a 4" pin to PAP might produce a better roll with a little more backend pop.

John with the info you provided, that should not be too bad of a layout. I would probably go a littler further right with the thumb, just to create a little more strength in the ball.

Brickguy221 and icetink -- Thanks for the links, they opened for me. I don't know why the ones on the Track site didn't, maybe I was a little impatient, they take quite a while to load.

EXCALIBER -- I'm not sure what you mean, do you mean put the mass bias more to the right of the thumb or move the thumb to the right of the mass bias (mass bias to the left of the thumb)? -- JohnP

I mean have the MB maybe 1- 1 1/2 inches right of the thumb.

EXCALIBER -- That's what I thought, but wanted to be sure. I'm going to be heading to the shop in about 30 minutes. The ball is supposed to come in today, and if it does we'll drill it tonight. I'm leaning toward a 3 - 4" pin to PAP, pin below fingers with MB 1 - 2" right of the centerline, but will let the customer review the drill sheet and get his input also. Drilled it this afternoon. Turned out his PAP was 4 1/8 x 9/16, so I was pretty close. Used 4" pin to PAP and 5 1/2" MB to PAP, with the pin about 1" under the fingers and the MB 1 1/2" right of the centerline and below the thumb. Drilled the thumb hole 1/2" extra deep and came out legal without a balance hole, but just barely on thumb weight. The ball rolled well, with a hard arc to the pocket. Not jumpy at all. But it was only just a little stronger than the Killer Instinct Pearl we compared it to. Were a little disappointed it wasn't stronger. We agreed to let him try it for a while at box finish, then if he wants to make it stronger we'll try giving it a little more surface. Or he may decide to polish the KIP to tame it a little and give more room between the two balls. Thanks for all the help. -- JohnP

Ofcourse you want to let him throw it a bit, but I would suggest taking a bit more of the weight out of the thumb. Odds are it was getting into a roll too quick.

The K.I.P. is going to have a stronger breakpoint, the GP2 will shine when he finds more oil.

Hey JohnP,

Sorry I missed out on this, relapsed with the flu again. The 5 1/2 mb may be just a little far for this ball to pick up soon enough and turn over. The reaction would have been stronger if you kept it in at about 3.75-4. However, I would still agree with Carl about the fact of trying this ball on a heavier condition. The GP2 will be able to show it's strength on oil...

EXCALIBER -- If I do take more thumb weight out, what would you recommend taking it to? As is, it's at 7/8 oz thumb wt., just a slight amount of positive side and bottom wt.

tenpinspro -- Thanks for the comment. Don't get me wrong, the ball had a good reaction. He did not want a skid/flip reaction, but a hard arc to the pocket. It seemed especially good on light hits, with good recovery when thrown out beyond target. We have a THS, 10 to 10, but not as dry outside 10 as some I've played on. In general, about 3 boards to hit to get to the pocket. We were just a little disappointed that there wasn't more separation between it and the KIP. And it's way too early to make any final evaluation. -- JohnP

If it is at 7/8 I would just do it in stages, but first try to take it to 1/2, then 1/4 etc....
