Track Ball for USBC Championships

Now that the pattern has been posted, is there any Track ball that favors the lane condition more than the others?

I am not sure one ball will favor the pattern. With varying speed and rev rates different ball are going to work. The way I look at it, is on the fresh I want a ball that isn't going to change direction fast. So I will probably throw a 715T or a 505T on the fresh for the first game or two. Then likely change to a 916AT that will get around the corner better. Singles and Doubles are always a toss up. Some people can throw weaker pearls, some throw strong balls. I am going to watch who is bowling in front of me and how the lanes are playing.

P.S For me the 505T seems to be a good ball on the fresh at nationals. It is the closest ball we have to a symmetrical core so it goes through the pins nicely. The 715T wasn't out last year, so I will try that one as well this year.

Off topic, I was watching some xtra frame on youtube and I thought I saw Chris Barnes throwing a 715T at the U.S. open during match play.  Would you be able to find out which track ball he did use?

Chris was throwing a 715T during portions of match play.

Having been at Carolier, most of the Hop-town staff was throwing 607A's with different surfaces.  Walter was using 715C's when I saw him and Fagan was using 505A's .  I didn't see Barney at all, but seems to me that the 715T would be too much ball unless it was on the fresh earlier in the week...TJ was flat out killing it with the 607A with the shine off...

I just bowled this weekend, and from my view it appeared that a little less flare and core worked better.  I had a Taboo and a Pure Physics that just didn't pick the lane up at all in practice, but when I switched on the last ball and tried my pin down Hyroad it read the mid and made a great downlane move.  My teammates noticed the same thing in that slightly weaker cores and covers were better.

That being said in the track line I would favor the 505 balls.  I wouldn't say one in particular, as the layout and surface prep matched up with your ballspeed.

The xtraframe moment I saw was the game to determine who would be in the top 6 for the show.  That's when I noticed the colors of the ball and it appeared to be the 715T.

Did Billy experience the same reaction on the left side?  He was playing deeper than the other leftys on the other pairs but then again he appeared to have a lot of tilt.

Okay, well I've been able to bowl on this years open pattern twice now and I think I'm ready to give my equipment impressions on how to play the pattern.

Bowler Statistics (RH)
Speed - 18.2 (in the heads)

RPM - 425

For me what gave me the best look on the fresh was my 916AT with a fresh 2000 surface. My 916 is drilled for the long and heavy with the pin about an inch above my ring finger and the MB about 1-1/2 inches away from my thumb. This drilling and surface prep allowed me to start with a basic swing shot from 13 to 8. It should be noted, as others have stated, if you miss a board right there is a little wobble down lane with stronger equipment and the ball will hesitate to recover. It happened to me a couple of times, and the 916 still made it back, but didn't cover enough of the pocket to carry. Overall, I found that the best option was to eliminate the miss right and focus on allowing your only miss to be the high hard one. Also, when playing the line this way you will get a good indication of when you need to move in or ball down, because all you need to do is watch for when the ball really starts to dive for the pocket (speed control is paramount, miss fast not slow with this line). I was able to stay with the 916 for 3 games with about a board move left with my feet each game. When the third game came the line was pretty well blown and I had two very good options in terms of preferred lines. I balled down to a 505T with a fresh 4000 surface. The 505 is drilled with the pin below my bridge on the grip center and the MB an inch from my thumb with a flare increasing hole down the VAL line from my PAP. With the 505 I had two viable options: (1) I was able to camp out on my original line starting with a 15 to 8 swing; (2) playing a inside swing from 25 to 11 and up the back of the ball (seemed to be the better option in terms of kicking out the ten).

Overall, it seems like a lot of records should be broken at this years open championships as there is entirely to much free hook on the lane. However, put the strong equipment away as quick as possible, because staying with it to long will turn your day into 4/9 city. So be mindful, watch everyone bowl, and anticipate the moves.
