Track Equipment and the Masters Pattern
« on: May 29, 2005, 12:03:40 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm going to be posting these threads as the summer pba pattern league I bowl goes on. This week is the Masters. Now I watched the Masters video that Wiseman won. P.A. was using a Blade Reactive and Big Blue Pearl, Patrick Healey Jr. was using a Triple XXX Factor and Wiseman was using some Mo-Rich ball.

With what I saw, let me ask the big dogs like EX, Rick, and Clint. If you know of anything of these balls that people you bowl with may throw. Which Track balls are like the ones listed below?

Blade Reactive, Big Blue Pearl, Triple X-Factor. Do any Track balls have the same or similar characteristics as those? The reason I'm asking is so I will have a feel for the Masters shot I bowl on this week (Tuesday). As always, everybody's help is greatly appreciated!

Mike,

First off the way the pattern played at the Masters could very well be different than the way it plays on the lanes where you bowl. This is due to the fact that lanes all carry different characteristics.

Blade Reactive: I would say the Heat is the closest

BBP: The Xception is probably the closest that Track has to offer, but the Xception will get slightly better length.

Triple X Factor: I think that you have 2 choices here, either a polished Rule OR an aggressively drilled Xception. Another option is the Arsenal Angular, but it will end up rolling up a tad sooner than you will see the Triple X Factor.

Thanks EX for your help, I was just wondering what I could possibly use come Tuesday. I wonder how my GP2, 5.0, and Slash would react on those specific conditions. I also figured in the factor that they were playing outside at miller park compared to being inside a center. Which you're right EX about the characteristics of each type of lane. So if you respond, what do you think those three will do. I'm not going to have my Rule in before Tuesday, I just ordered one. Thanks again for any help you have to give!

Michael,

I like the Slash on everything bud. It is a do it all type of ball. The GP2 will never be left home when I am going to bowl in a tournament or know that I am going to face a tough shot like you are going to. I am not sure about the 5.0 on that type of pattern, but with the backend recovery you cannot go wrong taking it.

One positive about all 3 of the balls you listed- including the GP2 when there is enough oil, they all play well when you get use them on an outside line. I finally got that chance with the 5.0 and it is extraordinary when you can square up with it.

Hey Michael,

Here's what I see would be a close reaction to the balls you mentioned.

Blade reactive - Heat (like Ex states)

BBP - a weak drilled Xception 5.0

Triple X - polished Angular or a weak 5.0

The tricky part here Mike is that with strong asymmetrical balls, we can truly manipulate or control reaction shapes with the mass bias placement.  It would be more of a an issue in tweaking the surfaces to help get a closer match.  Hope this helps...

I would agree the Heat, etc would be the closest. I would add the Slash as it is just a great ball as well!

See if I can help you here Mike
When bowling on PBA patterns it is best to use a reactive ball. Particles and Urethanes eat up the pattern to fast. Something not skid/snap but with a good control arch to heavy arch drilling depending on how much hand you have.

Try to roll the ball and not spin it to much. This will allow the ball to give you a truer roll and better look at the condition. Even the pros roll the ball as much as they can. It is all about repeating shots.

What they used on TV is of no consequence. They were on synthetics outside. For Track balls my choices would be:

For playing around 12 or 13 an X-ception or an Untamed polished or a box condition Slash.

For playing by the gutter an aggressively drilled heat or a Unleashed because it is so much more like a reactive than a particle.

Lane Bed,

Thanks for the help! The only Track balls I have that you listed is the Phenom Unleashed and Slash. I guess I'll go with those two and see what I come up with. Does this pattern have a transition off the bat real quick, or does it take a while to develop? Thanks again for your help and anybody's that can help me with this! I'll let you guys know tonight how I do!

Hey EX, Rick, Clint, and all the Track guys in this forum. What a doozy tonight...as predicted, the guys on staff for Track got it right...the Heat was the best performer tonight...didn't go to it till the 5th game, thus the actual high games of the night. Anyways...look below and you will see what I went through tonight...

168, 135, 173, 164, 222, 188
Total Pinfall: 1050 (-150)
Average: 175

No decimals tonight guys. My 164 game I started playing deep with the 5.0 and was getting some great hits until that line went bye bye in the 7th in which I split, open, you name it to ruin a perfectly good clean game. The 5th game I switch to the Heat and it was all great from there. Only mistakes were I missed a 10 pin and 4 pin which cost me 20 pins, so if those were picked up I know I would've shot 240+! This shot wasn't all that hard, you just had to repeat shots which were hard to do with three guys on the lane and everybody going "90 mphs" to get done. I think if I would've concentrated harder on spare conversations I might've averaged higher. I know my spare shooting was great on the Scorpion pattern because I was on the 190.5 pace. Last two weeks have been 174-175. Consistent I guess, but the 190 sure would be nice! Anyways, let me know what you think! I'll be posting another thread little later on...

Next week...bring on the CHAMELEON.
