Track Equipment and the Shark Pattern
« on: June 07, 2005, 03:23:58 PM »
Alright guys...

I told you it wouldn't be long for me to put up this thread. So all you Track Heads, if you've bowled on the Shark pattern, I wanna know how you played it and what you used to play the lanes. Everybody's advice is greatly appreciated...

Thanks Clint,

Based on that, I'd go with something a little mroe aggressive and get into the shot as they're suggesting.  Probably try to target around 15-16 (arrows) to an out point of about 9-10.  I'm going on what they're describing the shot as, you'd want to stay away from the corners due to hang.  Hard to say if they'll match it not or whether it'll play the same in your particular house though.  Hope this helps some....

On Sport-PBA patterns, ( I have bowled a few regionals in my day) a smooth ball is best. When coming off the pattern, there is no buff, nothing, so you need something to smooth out the transition. The Shark is the longest pattern, and requires inside angles by the PBA's description. I would do this....either Aggressive or a Slash. Both can handle some oil plus turn the corner from inside when needed. A GP2 could be an option if you smoothed out the backend, as I have in a few. The GP2's high Rg is a benefit to help it to get through the heads CLEAN. Clean is something that any bowler wants on any condition!

Michael,

I think that releasing the ball with more forward roll is going to be your best option on that pattern. Just try to keep it as straight as possible. If you miss right I think it will have a difficult time recovering.

Steve, I have bowled on the Shark pattern several times and I score very good on this pattern. The equipment you use should be clean through the first 15-20 feet, pickup a strong midlane roll, and be very smooth and continuous on the backend.

I normally use a sheer havoc or a freakaziod early drilled 5 by 3 1/2 pin under bridge with a hole short. I use clean and sheen polish and lightly touch them with scotchbrite by hand to add surface without taking off the polish.

When the lanes start to breakdown I switch to an aggressive or freakazoid drilled on a 5 1/2 by 3 1/2 pin above bridge with a hole at 4 inches.

I recommend balls with a symmetrical core and smooth rolling patters. The ball has to read the track area without jumping or finishing real hard. If the ball tries to corner hard it will jump out of the track area and go through the face and if you move in the ball will miss the track area and wash out.

I hope this helps.

Hey Guys,

I've seen a lot of put in's for the Arsenal Aggressive. Unfortunately, I do not possess one of those. I guess I could have listed my equipment below and then it would gave you guys a better idea to tell me what I could use with what I have.

Track Balls:
Rule GP2
Animal
* Rule
Phenom Unleashed
X-Ception 5.0
* X-Ception
Slash
Crash
Heat
* indicates I will be receiving later in the week...anyways I hope this helps...my style as Carl, Rick, and Clint know if I have not told them already is that I'm a tweener. Anyways, thanks again for the help and with all the talk about the aggressive I may just end up getting one of those.

Knowing your arsenal, the smooth Unleashed or Slash should fit the bill.

Hey Michael,

How's your Animal and Unleashed drilled?  Our friend Mitch B is a very good bowler with quite a bit of turn.  I'm thinking we need to go one surface level up from him on a 43 foot pattern to get the desired reaction and finish.  Plus the fact of the hang to the right like he mentions, it's always better to go with a little softer and stronger piece to have some mistake room vs trying to throw a frozen rope from the inside (10 pin heaven).

Hey Rick,

My Animal and Phenom Unleashed are both drilled with the Pin below the ring finger. Only difference is that the PU has a weight hole.

I've bowled on this quite a few times. I do not have a lot of hand (this is old pattern 'B' and B is for boomers)so this was the one pattern that I was scared of. Suprisingly, I made a good ball choice and it was not too bad. I had 2 low 600 series and a 595 my 1st 3 x's on it with no previous experience. I used a Freak Out drilled with pin above finger and put it at 1000 smooth. I gave the ball about 1/4 turn for a little rev to help it clear the heads and it reacted pretty well. You can miss a little left but right it will hang up and more as the evening proceeds on.

In your case I would put my Exception 5.0 at about 1000 smooth and bring your Unleashed at about the same. This is one of the patterns where a low load particle is a nice piece. Your X-ception should also be with you as well as a Slash.

You will have to play some where around 12 to 14 to start. Watch your ball speed. Too fast and it will not come back. If the house is synthetics you should start with your Unleashed and work towards whatever you are comfortable with. Watch your carry in practice and use what carry's best. Even if if is a little harder to get it there. Trust me on this point. A good look with poor carry is this patterns legacy if you do not make a move.

This pattern opens up more than any of the other patterns, provided that bowlers are playing the right part of the lane. Many bowlers want to use over- aggressive, sanded particles and this may be good for a short period of time but by the 8th frame, they will have corrupted the look and with enough carrydown this can get real ugly or open it up for the big hand boys.

The transition comes about every 8 frames for 3 person teams.

Good luck & good bowling.

Hey Michael,

I'd take LaneBed's advice to heart.  I like the idea of the Unleashed to start from inside and then change to the 5.0 after they open up.  The smoothness of the particle should help give you a truer read but both these balls also offer decent pop for your backend finish.

Don't know how close these 2 shots are but I just remembered I did try a 42 ft heavy Masters pattern at our Track seminar and I opened it up with my Angular fairly well but I was hitting it.  I'd say that for a tweener, keeping right around 12-14 (where Lanebed said) would produce a good angle but also going no further right then 8 at the breakpoint would help.  It might hang out there after that.  Hope this helps some bud, bowl well.
