Do any of you notice that some balls seem to rev faster then other balls in your arsenal? Your eyes are not playing tricks on you, most likely it is. The faster revving ball(s) are most likely also your lower “rg†(radius of gyration) ball(s). Balls that have a lower rg spin faster compared to balls that have higher rg’s (given that the weight blocks are placed in the same position for the same bowler).
This effect not only helps us play a shot correctly, it also dictates “how†we end up playing that shot. Theoretically, a faster spinning object adheres to the surface faster and better compared to a slower spinning one. It is similar to the concept of accelerating at the apex of a turn in our car. Since we all can’t be crankers, manufacturers have designed balls for us that spin faster to help in that area.
Based on this explanation, if you are more of a down and in player, you may want balls that have higher rg’s so the ball will lope down the lane and turn over and not roll too early for you. Conversely, if you like to swing the ball, lower rg equipment helps us do that.
Here is a chart for you guys to analyze and compare your own equipment to. If you have certain pieces in your arsenal or balls that you’ve liked, double check the rg’s on the piece and the layout and you may see a pattern. There are also ways to drill a ball that also makes it rev faster so that’s why we need to check the ball and layout.
Rg Value Rg Rating Typical Reaction*
2.43-2.48 Very low Very early and arcing break point
2.49-2.51 Low Early and strong arcing break point
2.52-2.54 Medium-low Medium length with snapping break point
2.55-2.58 Medium Gets down the lane easily with snapping backend reaction
2.59-2.66 Medium-high Late break point with sharp or arcing break point depending on carrydown
2.67-2.80 High Extremely late break point
