Rule weight
« on: December 07, 2004, 07:51:05 AM »
I was thinking about buying a new Rule.  I am curious to see a lot of you are using 15lbs balls.  I have always thrown a 16lbs ball.  I am wondering on the advatages/disavantages of the 15lbs ball.

I throw a med high rev with a med high speed.  Usually 21 to 12 or somewhere in that range.  I throw a Pheonom right now and love it.

15# all the way. I see no difference and hit and probably carry a little more of the heavier pocket hits due to a little more deflection. In long practice sessions or a long tourney format, my arm is not quite as tired as what I would be when I got done with 16#. I was ok as long as I kept bowling, but when I stopped, that is when I felt the difference. Nowadays, with the dynamic cores, I truly do not see a difference in 15# or 16# and see some people who were throwing 15# going to a heavy 14# in my shop.

ONE thing to remember though, I would stick with the same weight you currently have unless you are going to replace it with the new weight. I would not have 2 different balls at different weights. I could and can understand this if one is a spare ball, but not in this situation where you would probably want to use both when you see different conditions.

Ask if you have any other questions!
Thanks!
Clint

I concur with Clint. I've made the switch to 15 lb. equipment early in the 2003-2004 fall season and love it. From there I quickly assembled my arsenal all at 15 lbs., and only have one 16 lb. left in my equipment list. I see no sacrifice in terms of pin carry, I feel less fatigue in the longer tournament days I bowl, and the dynamics of the cores are the same to me for 14 lbs to 16 lbs.

It's probably best if you are going to drop in weight plan on getting at least 2 pieces at 15 lbs. and slowly reshape what you have from there.

Hey hack,

I also agree with the fact that there isn't much difference between the hitting power of 15 and 16.  In actuality, I've seen more guys get better control and more revs off the 15 because it's lighter on the wrist allowing for more turn, more turn translates into more hook which then turns into more overall power without additional muscle effort.  Hope this helps...

Thanks for the help I think I will have to buy a Rule and an Xception now.  It is going tough to let go of the Pheonom it has been some good times with that guy.

Also one other question.  Do you guys typically buy from on online bowling site and if so which one?

Thanks,
Dan

hack,

I just made the switch down to 15lbs. Less wear on my body etc...

I would not suggest getting the Rule in 15lbs if everything you throw is 16. You have to decide on one weight and go with it.

MY take on ONLINE shops: Some customers by off of them, that is fine. The customers that buy the ball from me get much better service throughout the year....free cleanings, 2 resurfaces etc.

I use 14lbs and I find that it seems to hit just as hard as many 15lb'ers.  Deflection is not a problem and I can play many games at a time without feeling very fatigued.

As for buying balls online: I personally bought a ball elsewhere and ended up only saving about $30.  I also felt guilty doing so.  I personally think it's better to guy your ball from your driller in order to develop a better relationship and to get possible discounts and additional services in the future! ...just my opinion.

Hey hack,

Most shops do not honor any warranties on a ball.  If by chance you had any problems, you'd have to send it back to the on-line shop (out of your pocket, avg $10-$20) and wait to see if they will replace it or not.  Check with your local proshop and see if they honor all products sold from their store, most do.  You could always go back to them if you had any problem plus you get to build a stronger relationship with them for future purchases possibly.  I personally also do free cleanings, sandings, grips and small things from time to time for any repeat customer.  Hope this helps...

Thanks for the help guys.

I have a small bowling alley I bowl a league out of, he is going to give me a deal.  I have been bowling a lot of open bowling, he said because I have been using some newer equipment he is selling more balls.  So you guys were pretty much right on with the relationship thing.

Thanks,
Dan
