Animal cover change question
« on: January 06, 2005, 12:02:52 AM »
Hey fellas my animal is shiny and I was wondering what surface change could I give it to make it stronger and handle more oil. How do you guys have yours. What grit, etc... Well to explain I threw it on a heavier shot and it performed pretty good, it was just a couple steps slow with it sliding a tad bit too much on the backend.

lilphyzx,

There are several grits you can use to help it handle more oil.  Since it's shiny, a good start would be around 1000-1200 grit.  That will give you a little more reaction without hooking too early.  If that's not enough, then 600-800 works well also.  That's the grit at which I keep my wife's Animal (no, not me Rick )

lilphyzx,

If it is just sliding a hair too much I agree with chappy, start with 1000-1200, this will also take the backend of the ball away a tad, but not quite as much as 600-800 would.

I would go little by little from a higher grit to a lower grit. Start with 1200 or so and if that is not enough, then go to 1000 ( or the next sandpaper grit you have) if you do not get the desired reaction. I finished mine at 600 and LOVE it.

Thanks fellas I will try that. At the really low grits, does it hook more in oil?

What happens is with the lower grit (320) etc, the rougher the surface, the quicker the ball will roll. You will see a reduction in backend, but with the ball rolling sooner, it will help the ball get up to the pocket quicker for you. The rougher the surface, the sooner the ball rolls because it is creating more friction, helping it grab. Thus the reason why polished bowling balls glide through the heads easier, the ball can not create as much friction between itself and the lane, so it goes further down the lane before making a move. On the other side of this, if you sand it down too much, the ball will only be able to be used on the oiliest of lanes. Any dry the ball encounters will make it want to roll and will probably roll too soon and cause the ball to roll out, hitting like a pumpkin. Thus the reason why you should start at the higher grit and work down to where you like the reaction you get.

Hope this helps!

Well my intentions were to make it a flood ball and only use it for that purpose. I dont need to use the animal everyday. I just ran into a heavy shot and it slid too much. It was still usable with the shine it had but just didnt drive as much as I needed.

If you don't need the Animal for everyday, then you can make it the heavy oil ball you need. Sand it down to the grit you want and go try it out. If you need more surface, go to the next grit. If a little too much, try taking it back up a level.

However, the new GP2 hooks more out of box than the Animal and may be a better choice for you on the heavy shot.

Just a thought.

I may look into purchasing the new rule, im thinking about throwing some polish on my rule so that I can use it for everyday use as oppose to whenever I find a heavy heavy shot. So then new one is suppose to be more aggressive huh.

I love the Animal too, but with the general public wanting new intros, you can't carry everything from the past. But I agree too, I wish the Animal was not going, but I wish the Phenom was still there, and the Freak, and the.....oh, there are too many.

i hope the ball's drilled for early roll.  if the MB's on or past your VAL, you're okay.  but if the ball's drilled to go long, definitely redrill.  if the MB's on your VAL and you still can't get it to hook/stop sliding, i'd take the cover down to 600 if not lower.  just make sure the MB is on or past your VAL.  then take down as much cover as you desire.  hope this helped.

yeah that helped. Im going to take it down as soon as i stop working so much and make it to the proshop. Now i have to find space in my bag to carry everything. Do you guys think the rule will match up to the animal on heavy conditions.

As far as Heavy oil goes...the Rule will not match up to the Animal, thus the reason for the Rule GP2. On the longer heavy stuff the Animal just picks up its roll much sooner.

Ex is exactly right, the Animal will roll sooner than the Rule, so it is better suited for the heavy stuff. When I get my 2 GP2s, I will compare them with my Animals and report the difference, but as Ten has already pointed out in his review, the GP2 was stronger than the Animal.
