Track Spare Plus
« on: July 12, 2018, 01:06:52 PM »
I've used the search function and couldn't any useful info on this ball.  Lately I 've had to resort to moving right and playing up and around 10 with my Storm Mix because everything left of that is toast.  And trying to find a decent line to pocket is a risky endeavor when you've got 5 or 6 low average no thumb lofter/crankers that have pretty much made conditions unplayable in the heads and mid-lane.

The newest track spare plus has me interested and I'm wondering if there is a risk of over/under with a strong asymmetrical core and a weak polyester cover.

The Storm Mix is consistent and you know exactly what's going to happen as soon as you let it go.  I hoping the Track Spare Plus will be just as consistent but with more hitting power because of the core.

Anybody got one and like it???

Over under is always there because of the condition and the ball coverstock you're trying to use. If they are pretty dry on the gutter,  which a lot of house conditions are,  it is a good option. I keep mine sanded and it rolls great.

Familiar with the Widow Spare which is very similar.  You won't have any over but quite likely to have under reaction. The polyester shell is very weak but don't be afraid to scuff it a bit if throwing it at the headpin. I think it works pretty good from outside of 10 on a dry THS for someone with slower speeds. Reaction could be similar to your mix but with a little different look. If you need more overall hook and have higher speed you might want to see get urethane with a dynamic core.

I agree with ignite about sanding it.

I agree with everything said here. But don't rule out a modern urethane or the Blue Hammer remake. Maybe use a weaker layout along with a higher surface so you can be sure it won't be too much since the Mix is shaping well.

Thanks for the info.  I'll keep my eyes open on the next couple of nights and see if I can spot anybody using the spare plus or widow spare. I'll talk to my PSO and pick up one or the other sometime soon.

I won't rule out urethane but the hot cell left a bad taste in my mouth. I just didn't match up well with that ball at all. I'll bet if I pulled that out of the closet right now I might love it.  Funny things happen like that sometimes right?

If only Storm would combine the Mix U1S control urethane pearl cover with the Hy-Road core I would already have one in my bag.  I think it would be a good selling ball.  Storm are you reading this???   Everybody is buying all of these hook monster/oil sponges you keep producing.  I don't blame you for it, money talks.  But I'm trying to stay away from these guys, lol.

Have you tried polishing the Hot Cell? You might fall into love with it that way..

Yes, I took it up to 4000 with polish.  Even tried the Vise polish with slip agent.  It was still too strong for what I wanted to use it for.  Basically I drilled it to strong so it would start to migrate and get into the hook phase sooner than I liked.  So then I added a P1 hole to take some of the flair out and I still didn't like it.

It just wasn't the ball for me, or wasn't the ball that would work on the conditions I faced most of the time.

We have a guy using a Hammer Widow spare with the Assym core.

He can tear it up on the right side on our extreme wet dry house shot!  Drilled pin next to ring and cg what we used to call stacked!

I am quite sure I saw he had a 780 with this pill!

I had the Widow spare in a 15lb and changed to the Track spare+ when I dropped to 14lb. The reason I switched from the Widow spare to the Track is Widow a bit stronger core. The are both great and I use mine for spares and dry lanes. I did hit the cover with a worn 2000 just to knock a bit of the shine off. I had a Mix and you'll see that the Widow and Track both flare! Just my $.02, Bruce

You guys were right about the Spare Plus with surface.  Picked it up Wednesday and got chance to roll it last night on a pair of lanes used by an earlier league.  Brought my ball spinner too.  I had it drilled pin just over ring finger with CG/MB stacked straight below it.  Probably about 5 1/2 in. from my PAP.  All my stuff is 15 lbs but I decided to go with the heaviest 14lb he had at 14lb 4 oz.  Figured I would have more control with speed/release and less worry about fatigue at the end of the match.

At OOB finish I played straight up and split the 1st/2nd arrow.  If I slowed it down a bit and put plenty of hand in it I could make it to the pocked but had trouble carrying the 5 or 10.  Left a few 5/7's and almost a sour apple, lol

Took it down to 500 on the spinner and it picked up at the arrows, way to soon.  Brought it back up to 2000 and it was perfect.  Kept splitting the 1/2 arrow, increased speed and more hand which was easy to do with 14lbs.  After I got things sorted out I never gave up the pocket.  It was all strikes and solid 9 counts.  I never finished below 190 and high game was 245.

Only bad thing is the Spare Plus in no longer a true spare ball at 2000.  It will flare and hook at the end making 10's risky, even throwing it flat and straight.  But it was a great option for the 3/6/10 and has enough drive at the end to cover the 3/6/9/10 which is a great confidence booster when things are tight and tough at the end when every pin counts.

Polyester isn't sexy but there is a reason unlike rubber its still around.  Glad to hear its working for you.  Do love my Purple Sumo polyester ball so +1 on polyester with a core.
