Need a ball that is strong but smooth off the dry.
« on: March 11, 2005, 09:25:15 AM »
Ok so I'm bowling in a new house now...the lanes are soakzored in the middle (soaked) sorry for creating a new word but god they are soaked. Other thing is the outsides are bone dry. I normally throw my power diesel here and try to cover a lot of boards before hitting the dry but sometimes it is still an inconsistant read. I have an animal untamed left in box condition that was suppose to be the ball to outhook my HeX (which it does) but read off the dry smoothly. Well it is so hard to read it isn't funny. I wanted to add polish but wasn't sure, last thing I need is another skid/snap. Sanding it down seems dumb to, considering it is probably burning too much energy now anyway with my slow ball speed. Any recommendations on what I should do with the darn thing? And if all else fails what in your opinion is a ball with a strong move but is still smooth off the dry? Thanks in advance.

I find that my Animal out of the box is very versatile and offers a great controllable yet big hook.  Dulling it down allows it to start revving up really early, however backend hook isn't as great.  When dulled, it'll handle any flood with a smooth, controllable, and very even hook.

Particle, or a solid reactive with a dull finish. I know I say it all the time, but the Monster Bruiser fits this bill well.

Hex,

I got that kind of smooth reaction out of my Sheer Havoc. It got into a decent roll and when it hit the dry it was a strong arc....very control set for flying backends.

I would try the Arsenal Aggressive.  I bowled with mine in conditions very similar to what you described and it was very predictable and smooth.  Don't be afraid to play with surface to smooth out the reaction in the back.  My Animal (not the Untamed) also works very well in those conditions but I think the Arsenal hits a lot harder.  Plus, given that you have lower ball speed I would go with the Arsenal.  I think that should do the trick.

Hex,

Another possible ball---sorry it slipped my mind earlier--- for the reaction you want could be the Hexplosion with the surface at like 1000 grit smooth. This would allow you to play up the oil lane with some success.

Smooth with continuation.

If a shorter pattern I have been going crazy with my PANIC (I know wrong forum Columbia ball and cheap).

This ball has a RockStar, and hyde core with the rg raised slightly (still low) and a low diff of .24.  Beautiful rounded move with great continuation.
No jump off the strong midlanes in my house!

Our pattern is 30 feet 10 to 10 with sharp christmas tree to 40 feet starting at the 30 foot mark.

I am playing like 10 to 6 but striking even out to 1.  Other balls that I have attempted to play this shot with.  Crunch inside(not bad) but not as good.
Sonic X, Sonic Boom, Icon 2, Icon(ok).

I have posted a review on this great ball recently.  Ball is sort of a solid pearl mix not really pearl not really solid.  It reminds me of a slightly weaker hex which judging by your screen name you may like!

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS lots of ohhsa and ahsss on the move this ball is making.  This dramatic over under wet dry on the left has allowed 1 300 on the left in 3 years.
I have one pocket miss in 5 games with this ball!
PPS my all world cheap arsenal in this bouncy house is Dyno Groove outside, Panic(oil line) , and Hyde or Crunch(inside)!

Lefty, I think he should venture more into something on the heavy aggressive side, but definately some sort of Particle load, and SYMMETRICAL to get the job done.  After watching Chapman throw the Arsenal Aggressive in league tonight, it looked so sweet out of the dry.  Strong, continuous, and Smooooooth, not sharp at all.

I would avoid anything assymetrical because they are designed to give that extra torque off the breakpoint that some people need in their game, so it can be big and smooth up front(like a Phenom or Animal), but still check up hard in the backend(like a Phenom or Animal).  For big and smooth, the Arsenal Aggressive looks like your best choice with the Hex as a step down from it.

Also be careful of your layout.  I would avoid anything super strong(the 3 3/8th type pin to PAP placements) because you might burn up your energy early and have the ball puke in the backend, leaving alot of buckets, weak 2-pins and nasty washouts when you miss right.  I have a Track Champ 4 1/4 pin-to-PAP that works very well for what you are describing.  I think a driling with the pin in the 4-4 1/2 range could do the trick with that ball for what you are looking for.

1st I would try to move right with a hexplosion pin about 3" above the midline if you cannot move right then try a aggressive with box finish pin 1.5" above the midline.

Thanks a lot everyone, my driller actually recommended polishing the ball first, and see what happens. If that doesn't work I think I will probably get an Aggressive, ball looks great and my ball driller has seen someone throw it, said it was real nice. I think polish may work though since I think the ball is just drilled to strong. It's probably just burning too much too early. I will let you guys know what happens. Thanks everyone.

Aggressive will fit you ok.....adjust the surface if you don't like it right away out of the box. Cover easily adjusts to what you want!
