USBC tournament arsenal
« on: February 22, 2006, 02:28:49 AM »
Hey fellow Track enthusiasts; i need to find a 3 ball arsenal to take to Corpus Christi in 2 weeks! The balls i currently have available are listed in my profile and if there isn't anything there that you think is suitable, give me some suggestions!I know some of you have had success in the past at the tournament and thought i'd asked for some suggestions on what to take. This will be my first year without using a wrist support and i have more reaction than before because of it.Any help would be greatly appreciated! Ken

If it were me, I would take 3 to cover the spectrum.  1 Heavy oil, 1 Medium and 1 Light.

Robo Rule
Xception 5.0
Desert Heat

I bowled on the USBC shot yesterday and shot some video that I will be posting soon. You may want to check it out since we have similar specs.

Ken,

I have not bowled in this year's USBCs and have not been able to locate a team or doubles partner so I will not be going. SO I have no idea what the shot will be like.

I have bowled the past 2yrs...Reno and Baton Rouge.

Most of my success last year came with a Rule GP2 during team event when the shot is a bit tighter, and in singles/doubles the Arsenal Angular was the way to go. Your 4.25 Reactive sounds very simliar in layout to the Angular I was using.

Personally, if I were going I would take something to cover the heavy stuff. ROBO

I would take something for the mediums...but I would want something that clears the heads very well and makes a strong PREDICTABLE move in the backends. ANGULAR OR 5.0

I have not seen anyone require a ball for dry lanes at nationals. SO.....once again if it were me, since I have something for mediums with length and strong backend already I would then take something that is a strong smooth arc throughout the lane.....but is only in the med/med heavy category. I would probably place the Arsenal Reactive that rolls a bit sooner here.

I hope this helps,
Carl

I have bowled here locally on the pattern put out on older wood lanes.  Unless you have no revs at all, I would suggest staying with the lighter oil stuff...    maybe the weak drilled exception, heat and desert heat?  From what I have seen, they play fairly dry...

Yeah...I tried the Reno shot on older wood lanes....it played VERY easy and VERY forgiving.

Stay with the stronger stuff Ken.

Hey Ken,

I've bowled the last 4 yrs consecutive and sorry Storm Track but it looked nothing like what you played on (unless of course Corpus will be different).  If I went out to 5, it either backed up into the gutter or picked off the 6-10 (pretty decent oil out there).  About 8 out is out of bounds unless you're like Strapper Squared or someone who has pretty high revs, backends were decent.  Typical tweener shot is at about 17-18 to 10-11 and the deep track area is also where you create the most friction.  Watched guys washing out all day trying to play up between 5-10 like they were at home.

Team is fresh oil and then singles and doubles events follow with whatever is leftover.  I used my GP2 on team event and then the next day for S&D, they were drier of course.  I'd suggest the following:

Team set: GP2
S&D: Reactive and then Heat

Hope this helps some...

Rick,

Never been before so I can't say how different it played from previous years all I know is we have the same Kegel machine and use the same cleaner. The only difference is they are using Offense HV conditioner and we use Infinity.
Infinity is the latest of the Kegel conditioners and I don't see how it could play that much different.
The shot was fresh and was put down after oiling the other 30 lanes so there was definately no dry brush issue, we check the oil pump output on a regular basis and it is set at 40ml just like the pattern says it should be.
Have you looked at this years pattern, it is not that difficult and has just enough oil outside for some hold.
According to the graph they have at bowl.com.

Board  Distance  Units
2      15'        8-9
2      25'        8-9
2      37'        4-5

Our THS has 3-4 @ 39' 1' short of the pattern end.
In my opinion this years pattern isn't to far from a THS and I think that scores are going to be much higher than years past.
The leader in singles so far shot 789, to cure my curiosity I looked up their last years score and average they shot 562 and averaged 212-216. They also shot their first 300, 299 being their previous high sanctioned score and only honor achievement. This tells me they either shot the series of their life while under pressure or the shot is soft, leaning toward the latter since I found what I put down to be fairly easy. But on the other hand a guy bowled on it a few days earlier and he was having a little trouble getting the ball to read properly he has about 3mph more speed than me and around 150rpm more and about twice as much tilt same rotation.
The video also makes it look a bit softer than it was cause you only see my good shots. I had some where I missed, got soft or fast with and they resulted in some ugly leaves even threw a few into the big gray board.

Storm Track, I must apologize. I just got some feedback last night and my good buddy is leading all events (Dave Hewitt). He also shot a 788 singles and he was playing out I was told.  Very interesting this has appeared this way because it is the 1st "USBC" Open, I wonder if they're trying to set a new precedence for the Nats.

Rick,
No appology neccesary, it is appreciated though. I don't understand why they made the pattern so much easier this year. You may have a point about the new precedence. Only problem I see with that is it could make it a carry contest which doesn't do much for the sport. I was expecting something tougher than last year with all the talk about trying to improve the integrity of the game. IMHO having a shot like this for the National tourney can only hurt the integrity.
