Triple Threat
« on: November 17, 2003, 04:51:03 AM »
I have only used my Triple Threat for about 15 games now, but I have to say I am a little disappointed with it.  I have never left so many 8- and 9- pins in my life!!  Just as I am about to get something going, it seems this ball does not allow me to.  Yesterday I started out with my Phenon and finished my first game throwing 10 strikes in a row, then early second game switched to the Triple Threat when the lanes started getting drier, and then came the 8- and 9- pins.  In practice I have gotten a lot of 8s and 9s as well with this ball, no matter what house I bowl at.  I know it is part of the game, but has anyone else noticed an inordinate number of 8- and 9 pins with this ball or is it just me?!?  I will update this in the coming weeks to see if this trend continues or not...

By the way, I really like the movement this ball makes to the pins.  If there is any dry area on the lane for this ball to grip, it will move.  A lot of oil you will not be able to play it, but I have found it is a very good complement to the Phenom once the Phenom starts hooking too much.

My Track balls that I have thrown did this when they were new.  Then they chilled out when the track started to wear in. I still get a few if I put too much hand into the release and it is starting to dry out.

I've had my Triple Threat for about 2 weeks now and I've noticed a few 8-9 pins in my game too.  What I did was switch back to a 5-step approach and that seemed to help last Thursday.  I bowl tonight too.  I'll see if it works again.

Bowled today with my Triple Threat, and not one 8- or 9-pin.  I feel much better about this ball now!  I guess the last couple of times I have just had bad luck...

Stick an arc drill on it, leverage or 5" from from PAP pin placements with mind bending flip isn't the be all and end all.

On 11-18, I said that I was going to switch back to a 5-step approach to see if my Triple Threat carried any better.  HUGE difference!  This is now my "A" ball.

mikeny278,

If you are serious about leaving too many 8's and 9's, reduce your positive static weights as needed to get more of a controlled smooth finish vs snap(even negative if necessary). The 8's and 9's are indication of a ball that's driving a little too sharp and strong. Hope this helps...

If it makes any difference, I tend to agree with tenpinspro and 1fife on this.

As it stand right now, the TT does not seem to be the correct goto ball for you from the Phenom. A lot depends on how you are leaving those 8s and 9s, but in general, the ball seems too over/under. I'd suggest taking a grey (it's about 1000 grit) Scotch-Brite pad to it, by hand and take off some of the polish, not a lot and not all of it. This is just to get the ball to bite the lane slightly earlier, in order to even out the ball's reaction.

Hey Guys,

Almost after I posted this, I stopped using my TT because our house went to a drier shot.  Just this past week the lanes had oil on them again, and I left over 3 games five 8-pin leaves, and one 9-pin leave.  The ball was really flipping into the pocket as opposed to an even arc.  Only left one 10-pin the whole time though!  Rereading the posts below, it seems that I need to make the ball less flippy for how I am throwing it.  What would be the better solution:

1) adding a weight hole to get more of an arcing reaction
2) adding more surface to the ball

I kind of am leaning toward (1), but just wanted a few quick opinions from you guys.

Thanks ahead of time!!!
Mike

Hey Mike,

Same as before, I'd go with reducing the side weight.  Good luck...

Mike,

Try the weighthole and if you still need a smoother reaction, try Track's Clean 'N Smooth.  It's a 1500 grit based polish that will put a very slight sheen to the ball.  Enough to smooth it out but still get it down the lane. I've used it successfully when I've had balls that were too much downlane.
