Mini Review: Animal Untamed
« on: May 24, 2004, 09:54:05 AM »
I debated for awhile how I should drill this ball. I decided on something strong with a different MB placement than anything else I have.

Layout: 4 inch pin (even with the finger holes) 4 3/4 inch MB(just right of the thumb). The ball was left with the factory finish.

Lane Condition: 38ft buffed to 44, heavy oil in the mids tapered out to the gutter. WOOD lanes.

Line: I had to stand pretty deep with the Untamed....feet on 35, playing 23-24 at the arrows out to about 7 board. If I missed in the ball was going through the nose. Even if I took a little bit of hand out of the ball I could only get 5-8 boards further right.

Reaction: EARLY, EARLY, EARLY!!! This ball will need head oil, and if you do not have head oil....it should be put away. The ball gets into a smooth roll very early. At the breakpoint it is not super strong, but that is simply because of the surface it has on it. My plan is to add some polish to it and see what it does.

Impact: I have yet to throw a Track ball with the Morpheous Core (or 2.0 or any other variation) that does not totally SMACK the pins when it hits. When the ball reaches the pocket, the pins are pushed down and back.....the way they should be. There were messengers galore with this ball.

Readability: It is very difficult to tell this soon with the Untamed. The lanes have not really been done for a month, until today. I can say this much.....it will let you know when you are reaching the buffed oil and then when you hit the dry.

Overall: This ball is sooner rolling than the Phenom Unleashed for me. It is also less angular than the Havoc. It has a smooth arc, thus the reason it will start up very soon if there is not oil present. As far as an Arsenal ball....this is definately a good one to add. VERY EARLY to say this, but I think I may like this ball more than I did the Phenom Unleashed. This ball....as opposed to most other Track Asymmetrical balls is not as release sensative.....a simple hand position change will not always get the job done. All in all......a very good ball. I easily see this as my favorite ball next to the Animal in my current arsenal.

Thanks Ex, this helps me confirm that it wasn't just my short mb placement.  I think I can use it on the fresh shot at the Nats where you don't have a lot of swing room, it should help pull up and stay controlled on the backend as far as I could tell.

Ex and Rick,

Can you tell us more on the comparison between the Untamed and the UI?

Hey Laufaye,

I drilled a few UI's and from what I've seen, this is also a very smooth early rolling ball.  I'd say the difference between the 2 is just the matter of oil concentration that they should be used on.  I'd say the UI is for heavy oil while the Untamed fits underneath that in the med/heavy category.  Both have pretty good hitting power when used on the proper condition.  Your Animal depending how it's drilled should naturally go a little longer down the lane but have a much stronger backend.

I'd suggest either the Untamed or the Havoc to fit in between your X-factor and Animal/UI.  If you decide on the Untamed, be sure not to place the mass bias too close to your val as this ball needs no help in standing up and reading the mids.  As with what Ex saw, I needed head oil to help this ball clear.  Hope this helps and feel free to pm me if you want any further info, thanks.

the question, however, is.......

Is the Animal and Untamed together a good 1-2 punch?

Jeffrevs, I haven't thrown the Animal much (just not enough oil) but my wife has thrown it quite a bit.  She thinks she may have finally found a ball that can compete with/replace her Colussus as a heavy oil ball.  I would surmise that it would be a good one two punch.  Animal when they are fresh but as it starts to hook too early, switch off to the Untamed.  The Untamed should still give you the  midlane and strong finish but just more length.

I'll just post some thoughts as they have very few games and only on one house.  I didn't compare it to anything else.  I threw my Untamed polished.  I hit it with Clean N' Sheen to get it to a nice shine.  Mine is 4.5 with the MB on VAL.  I drilled the Sheer 45* with a 5" pin in box condition (which is also suppose to be Clean N Sheen).  Both balls have weight holes on the axis.  Condition was pretty easy..oil about 38', pretty clean backends with dry out but pretty tapered.  Getting to the pocket is very easy.  Carry is normally the issue.

The Untamed gets pretty good length but what I really like is how it starts to read the mids but it doesn't change direction.  You can see it standing up but then it's a hard strong arc.  Very strong in the back but not flippy.  I was suprised at how controllable it was.  This was an excellent ball on this condition and the carry was phenomenal (my ball roll doesn't match up well normally to this house so carry is an issue).  I'm glad that Track lowered the RG on this when adding the resin cover. The Sheer Havoc was also very nice.  On the same condition, it was about 2 boards weaker but much smoother when hitting the dry.  It wants to start up a little early but it's still smooth. Both hit extremely well.   The Sheer is stronger than the specs state.  It seems to be a good control ball once they start breaking down but you still need that read.  The Triple Threat is usually too early the the CrunchTime/Crash can be OU at times.  Hard to tell about length as the lanes are pretty new sythetics and they had fresh oil.  The Untamed and Sheer are a nice 1-2 punch for me.  A Crunch Time and a Dry Heat would make a nice 4ball arsenal.  If you happen to bowl where there's more oil, add the Animal at the top.

I'll be bowling in several houses over the next few days so I should have a good idea about these balls once I get back.

laufaye----Animal Untamed is much stronger for me than the Ultimate. Actually....when I bought the Ultimate I was expecting the same kind of reaction I get out of the Untamed. The Ultimate did have good HIT...but not quite what the Untamed has. Overall.....I wish I wouldn't have purchased the Ultimate. I tried the Dyno Thane Anomaly and Ultimate Inferno.....both reactives that "hook" in each company's eyes......Neither match up with the Untamed. <-----<<< This is not a bias comment towards Track...this is the truth as I saw it having thrown all 3 on the same condtion in the same house.

Jeffrevs, I think they make a good 1-2 combo.....Animal for heavy Untamed for for when you need a little more length but still have to have that good midlane read and strong roll. I did not throw it very much....but the Untamed is has a very similiar reaction to the Element you got off of me......only with more continuation on the backend. Hopefully that will help you more.

would you say the UNtamed is "longer and a tad bigger on the back" than the Animal?

Jeff, Longer and definately bigger. I am not sure if bigger is the word I want to use, maybe more angular is a better way to put it.

As stated in the mini, I am thinking of putting some polish on it. Maybe take the surface down to 800 and throw some ProTraction on the surface.

Hey guys,

I didnt want to start a new post, so I would rather just put Ex's post ttt...

I just found out that the Animal Untamed surface(mega smooth) is a 2000 grit wet sand ONLY...strange...I got this info from Chuck Gardner over here on the east end.

Glad to see everyone likes their Untamed...I have mine layed out 5 x 4 1/4, MB in the #2 pos., with the pin above the bridge(3 1/4" above my center grip)...This ball is a TANK!!! definitly longer and more pop in the back ends, compared to my regular Animal..

I'll post a mini review once I get the chance to.

Hey,

Has anyone here compared the UI to the CT or the SH to the C, or maybe the CR to the original PH.

Or come to think of it the UL to the BCB, or wait what about the FP to the HV.

But I'll tell you I did see the FD vs the Original PH and really there was no comparison.

Did I make myself PC here.

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS maybe a little bit too much LINGO here!

PPS All this because I'm embarrassed I'm not in the CLub!

Come on guys, we've been waiting for a Mutant reactive. It's our skid flipper. Shine 'er up, clear the heads let 'er go, "SNAP". A good skid/flipper is the hardest type of reaction ball to find and now Track has produced the king. The Inferno was just a poor copy of this, (look real close and you can see how they just filled in the spaces) now we have the real thing. Me and Del have talked about this for a long time and with the two Havocs just underneath The Untamed what a good lineup we have.
