Strong ball and drill for a short pattern
« on: June 23, 2005, 02:49:53 AM »
I asked my ball driller to redrill my FAZ because it was to strong for the house shot and it wasn't serving a particular purpose in my arsenal. It is labeled drilled and the surface is in box condition. He said he had a new chemical to use on it (don't know the name of it) before we redril it. It is supposed to delay the hook and dull the surface a little. Well I was pleasently surprised by the results. I took it directly to league after getting it back and threw a 189, 214 and a 249 with some release changes. I couldn't use it after that I tryed chasing the oil but it got dry and sort of spotty. I changed balls until I got to the weakess ball in my bag. Even though they got through the heads because of the short pattern I couldn't get anything to hold. I know that you should get a weak ball for this condition (reactive, urethane etc..) but I don't want a real weak ball. Anybody have a suggestion of what track ball to use and how to drill it? I'm thinking a Rule if i can find one or something with a strong core and solid cover. Help me out, oh it is a 37 foot pattern. I know this might make the ball condition specific but thats O.K. I have other stuff. Thanks Guys

You want something that gets through the heads, goes long, and makes the turn?

About the best strong ball for that is the original Xception. It clears the heads with ease, the GOO LS cover gets it down the lane and wham....makes a nice turn and has nice hit. The original Rule has the same core, but is dull with original GOO reactive cover. It will probably be too strong up front for what you want, especially if you dril it strong. Polish it, and you might as well buy an Xception, although the covers are different.

Thanks for the reply. I have a friend who has a rule and a xception and the are to much for this condition and I have more revs then he does. I guess that i'm looking for a ball with lower differential. I would prefer not to have to play with the surface much right after I buy it. Maybe i'm looking for a urethane. I bowled against a guy who was having great success with a Columbia U dot, yes a Columbia U dot. Whats do you think? Thanks again.

Go with a Heat or a Desert Heat.  Choose depending on how much actual reaction you want.  You might want the Heat, drilled a little mellow, as it will give you more pop on the backend than the Desert.

Hey Big,

The closest thing we have is the Desert Heat which you "might" be able to use.  The hard part here is that the condition sounds very very dry if the U-Dot was working well.  Pretty tough to force a ball to work on a given condition, typically to score higher, we'd have to match a ball to that condition.

What you're describing is like forcing yourself to use 3 iron 100 yards out.  That's going to be pretty tough unless you alter your physical game to a huge extent.

I think desert heat it is. Your comments along with achappys comparing the dry heat and the desert heat and the fact that the differential is low should help. I'll drill it strong and let you know.

Thanks

Desert Heat is the correct choice!
