Track Equipment and the Chameleon Pattern
« on: June 01, 2005, 08:44:16 AM »
Alright guys, going into the 4th week of the PBA pattern league. After bowling on 3 patterns (scorpion, cheetah, masters) my overall average is 179.67. I have gotta step it up. This week is supposedly one of the most toughest shots on tour. Chameleon, so I watched Paul Fleming during the Denver Open and he was using a Crash. I used to have this ball, so I decided on ordering another one. I also have the Rule on the way. I watched Tommy (Jones) play it deep, Paul stroke it smoothly up the 3rd and 4th arrow. Watched Duke do the same, and watched Voss shoot 268 playing it straight up the 8 board! So, as I always ask, let the advice flow. Current arsenal along with new ones on order listed below: (what can I play with? how should I play the lanes on this pattern?)

Rule GP2, X-Ception 5.0, X-Ception, Animal, Phenom Unleashed, Rule, Crash, Slash, Heat

As always, the advice given is much appreciated!

You mentioned alot of bowlers and your profile mentions alot of awards, but no mention of how you throw the ball.  That's the most important thing we need to know.

on this pattern you will be playing in the track, the best ball i found to use on this pattern was my Phenom, was playing straight up the 2nd arrow. The guys i bowled with who has bigger rev rates were playing deeper but the balls breakpoint was ALWAYS around the track area. When it is fresh, use more aggressive equipment, when it starts to break down you can move and play outside the track area (via Liz Johnson), which is VERY heavy oil.

Go with something polished around a 4 1/2 - 5" pin placement, that might have a weighthole to smooth out the transition, perferrably symmetrical if you're playing deep inside which is the perferred line.  If you're comfortable on the ditch around the 3 board, something rolly with surface around 800-1200 grit might work as well.

sorry to dissagree with you DP3, but you have got to put quite a bit on the ball to play up 3, or the lanes need to be broken down a bit. There is now "best" way to approach this pattern but stay relativly near the track area...

We are talking about the same pattern that Liz Johnson took a Dull Vertigo on and whacked the men(except Jones) with aren't we?

the lanes were broken down from practice/ she was using a dulled ball... I have bowled on this pattern FRESH, and you have to have Jones revs to get it back from 3...

One thing everyone has to remember, the same pattern put down by 2 different machines on 2 different surfaces will yield different results(the way it breaks down, etc.)I would tend to say stay inside, but keep an open mind on moving where others are scoring from, or at least their breakpoint they are using down the lane.
