Vids from Corpus Christi
« on: June 09, 2006, 09:45:59 AM »
Okay guys, for those who are interested…..here are some vids from the Nationals this year at Corpus Christi.

First vid is team event where the oil was what I define as a med/med condition.  Bowl on heavier oil at home but the centers were definitely drier then 10 out.  I was fluffing my Robo for this because if I hit the ball, it jumped and if I went to a weaker cover, it didn’t read the midlane in the track area strong enough.

The next vid is the singles event showing where I started and how dry the center of the lane was and what I had to move to get to the pocket.  I was throwing my Machine for these shots.

http://media.putfile.com/Nats-Singles

This next vid is a single shot showing the out of bounds during team.  I know guys had said they were playing out but it wasn’t there when we went or I could’ve made this ball bend back.

The next couple of vids are for fun guys…he’s a BR member.  I said this is what Popeye would look like bowling!..lol

Ooooh, interesting. They seem like they played like your average modified house shot. Pretty cool because I have a tournament on the Corpus Christi shot this weekend.

It's not. My brother bowled on it few days ago and he said it was really tough!

Rick I think what they meant by playing the out of bounds is starting the ball outside and playing straighter up the boards from that point. I had some success playing that line.

I too found the middle of the lane dryer. I was surprised I was able to use my cobalt bomb, I thought the lanes would have had more oil in the middle than they did and that was fist squad on fresh oil too.

Thanks Coach, I was familiar with this, D.Hewitt (very good friend) "was" at one time the all events leader and he told me what he played to do this.  I've bowled with him for years now so I know his game pretty well and he has pretty good forward roll but tweener92 (who also has very good forward roll and revs) tried that line, it didn't really come back consistently.  I also have another friend who has about 250-300 rpms with good speed and "he" said he was getting it back from the 3-5 board the same time Hewitt had scored out there. That tells me there had to be more friction or dry out there, I bowl with these guys, they don't turn the ball "that" much.

When I visited the Columbia plant, Dale Garner in marketing said one group of guys from there had went, had a great shot and a few weeks later another group went and the outside shot was no longer there.  He's the one that actually defined the "spike" in scoring to me since he's been seeing quite a few bowlers come directly from the tourney when they visit the plant.

Some of the big boys were out there in my squad as well (Socha, Brazeau and team) all with eagles next to their name and they didn't "kill" it either.  They shot mid to low 6's...

I guess most of your equipment you used was with good surface...OOB or did you tweak some? Scoop us on your coverstock preparation and what pin/pap/mb placements worked well for ya. Thanks for any info you can give your hitmen and others!

Robo was OOB 4x3 5/8mb 3 1/4 above mid line
Machine polished was 3 3/8x3 3/8mb 2 3/8 above mid line

Even in team (fresh oil) if I got it inside of 10-11, it went left standing about 33 or so.  I had to catch just a hair of the heavier oil (out of bounds)to help the ball push downlane but "not" too much or it would skate out from under me...pretty touchy.  As Coach Jim also saw the insides pretty dry like I did, this also ties in with Jon's (RipaRack) explanation about bigger moves because the centers were never there to help you skid or fade off of.  You pretty much had to "create" your own length (by speed, loft or in my case, extreme angle).

Oh yeah, I definitely agree with Jon on the transition.  In Team, the backs were kind of clean to start but that went in about 7-8 frames of the 1st game.  Just ask Tbrockette cause he went from hitting the pocket to skidding by and not hitting the headpin playing the same line.  Same thing happened in Dbls and Singles, what little backend there was got pushed down very quickly.  Hope this helps some and feel free to ask more or call me and I'll fill you in cause I've watched your vids and I kind of know how you throw the ball.

Tyrone, what I found was on fresh oil you needed something fairly aggressive for the first 7 to 9 frames, then you either had to move farther inside (4 and 3 for me) or change to a less aggressive ball.

I payed the extra money to video tape my squads. When I watched the dvd, I  found myself yelling at the screan to change balls instead of beating the lane to death with my Epic Battle, that worked so well the first game. It is much more difficult to see the ball grabbing the lane early from the foul line than it is from the stands, but that is what was happening.

So, bring something aggressive, but controlable for the first game and be ready to change once you have burned a hole in the oil.

Just wondering... would this shot have been good to use a straight down-and-in approach (maybe over 3rd arrow) using something weaker, like a Desert or Solution PP EX? Why the choice to use fairly aggressive equipment?

Hey Ty, the only difficult part with using a weaker ball is that it would limit your area on the lane (unless you could produce a high amount of revs and get the ball to turn over on the backs) even though it would help clear the heads easier.  Exactly as Coach Jim describes, it helped to have some surface cause the oil density right of 10 was pretty decent.

If you hit anything inside of 12-13 at the arrows without some decent speed or angle, it would be dead left or a better way to describe it, it would be dead on the nose, pretty amazing.  Then as you moved left, the drier it was so you had to either swing further right, go to a harder ball or make sure you keep the speed up but then you also couldn't get "too" far right or it would hang.

I wonder after thinking about what my friends did out there if they didn't also blow a hole down the outside boards for themselves which is what allowed them to score as high as they did.
