Mutant on Wood vs Synthetic
« on: August 21, 2004, 06:50:05 PM »
I love my Mutant, don't get me wrong, and maybe this is normal, maybe not, but I need feedback.

On any wood house, anywhere, the Mutant is a great ball for me. I absolutely love it, and will always have it in the bag...

On any synthetic house however, it hooks right, it looks right, but you can actually HEAR IT SAYING EXCUSE ME WHEN IT TOUCHES THE PINS! It's so weak it needs the sweep to help push it thru the backend.

It's the strangest thing I've ever seen. I've never seen such a dramatic difference in a ball between wood and synthetic, any house, any condition...

Possible?

Have you tried it on synthetic lanes with a fresh shot with clean backends?  Carrydown and burned heads are what usually cause this problem for me.  It seems to burn up so much energy too early and although it still hooks, the hits aren't flush (I left a 7-10 split today while practising).  Overall hook does seem to be greater for me on wood, but I've only bowled at one wood house and it seemed that the oil pattern was much shorter.

-I'm talking about my Phenom, but because the Mutant also has a particle coverstock, the problem might be the same.

Hey lefty50,

There could be a couple of reasons for deflection.  One would be the ball burning up(loss of stored energy) before it hits and the other is the possibility of carry down as icetink mentions.  I wouldn't honestly say that it's the big difference between the wood and synthetic, it's just a matter of what the ball is really doing at impact that's causing the weak hits.  I've bowled on lacquer to synthetic and it still boils down to the stored energy in a ball upon impact.

The two questions I ask to try and help people are:
1) Did the ball roll up?
2) Did the ball roll-out?

It's not a very easy thing to separate if you don't have a good eye but if you pay close attention, you'll learn to see the difference.  Yes, I agree ball movement will vary from wood to synthetic somewhat(with all things being equal) but can be altered to score on if you can tell the difference between roll-out and roll-up.  These 2 reactions require different adjustments to strike.

Lefty, try this and see if it helps.  On the synthetic, change to a harder ball and see if finishes better.  If it does, the Mutant may have been rolling out.  If the harder ball does not finish better or has problems getting up to the pocket, then move right with the Mutant a couple of boards(from orig target before) to flush the pocket because it was then probably carry down that caused the deflection.  Hope this helps or feel free to pm me...
