What can I expect??
« on: July 17, 2004, 10:09:45 PM »
When I get my Darkside?? I want it to be weaker than my CT. That is drilled pin right of ring, cg 1/2" right of grip center. As most of you know, the CT is a pretty strong ball. I need the Darkside to fit under the CT. What are this balls natural characteristics?? Is it naturally long on the lanes, what about the backend?? I assume it is smooth due to the particle cover. I need to figure out how to drill this for lighter conditions. Thx.

Rock, my Darkside has good length, but tends to have a real sharp snap on the back mainly because of the drilling though. If you were to have it roll sooner (like my Dry Heat does) it would be a great drier lane ball

I apologize Im not trying to spam your post, but whats the point of buying a ball that you cant use in sanctioned events?

Actually, I think you can use it for sanctioned events. This ball and many other overseas balls have been passed by the ABC. I think that if they are passed by the ABC, then you can use them in sanctioned events.

Its ok BK, I checked the ABC list and it was approved in June of 2003. Now back on topic, how can I drill this thing for drier conditions??

Rock,

Comparison.....CrunchTime is sooner and stronger overall than the Darkside. The Darkside is not a super strong ball, but probably too strong to be a true dry lane ball unless you throw the ball super fast and are up the back more than around the side of the ball. My first Darkside was drilled very similiar to my Crunch Time....and it was probably 4 boards weaker overall than the Crunch time and it is much more sensative to oil.

Currently the Darkside is my dry lane ball (I KNOW I KNOW...very contradictive to my previous paragraph). I have it drilled with 1/2 oz negative and the pin just left of my middle finger. SUPER LONG....any sign of oil and it will not turn the corner. With this layout it goes SUPER LONG....and has a small snap on the backend. I tend to agree with Sean a bit here. If you lay it out to use most of its energy early (maybe like a 1inch pin from PAP layout there will not be a tone energy left for the backends. I would try the layout I have on mine though----because if you do not like it and want to try the 1 inch pin from PAP layout it will keep the plug away from the track area.

goodluck

Thanks Ex, I was actually thinking of doing something similar to what you recommend. Put the pin above my bridge and keep the cg in the palm. Would that work??

Rock,

I actually typed that incorrectly....the pin on my Darkside is LEFT of the middle finger. Given your PAP location and stats listed in your profile, I would not go above the bridge, I would go in the area slightly left and love the middle finger. From that point put the CG about half and inch left of your grip center.

Sorry about that typo and I am going to correct it now.

Hey Rock,

Sorry bud, been spending some "quality" time w/ the wife.  I agree with Ex's layout for the drier conditions, my Darkside(4.5x3 pin out, high glossed) is also one of my harder balls in the bag.  It has very good length and pop as Sean mentions, so taming it for true "dry" will be somewhat necessary.  If you want it just under your CT, then you can also place the pin above bridge and cg out right of grip to have more backend, your choice.  Hope this helps..

Thanks guys. I was hoping the two of you would chime in on drilling!!

Yeah, I will probably set the pin just off to the left and above my bridge. Not sure what to do with the cg yet. Either way, I can tame it down some with polish if the cg placement is too aggressive. Thanks. I will let you know how it ends up and how well it works on dry.

Just as an FYI, the lanes have been so dry at my place, last night I was standing on 32, hitting 22 at the arrows and 8 at the break point and the ball was coming back hard. Sometimes too hard and even throught the nose!!

Hey Rock,

Re-check your pap, from the vid I saw of you after the lesson, your release looks much stronger.  I'm guessing that your track should have raised some by now, just letting you know.

PS. Remember to change profile as well for info purposes..later bud.

Yeah, I have been meaning to do that. My track has rased a bit, thus getting more side roll on the ball and a better ball reaction as of late. I will recheck the PAP co-ordinates and update accordingly.
