Title: What is a good ball for....
Post by: kfortune on March 19, 2005, 01:00:12 AM
What would be a good ball for a lefty bowler who doesn't bowl much anymore but might want to try getting back into it.  I have bowled many years but have an old NITRO ball.  I throw about medium speed would like to hook the ball more on some medium/heavy oil conditions.  Average around 190 -195 when I bowl once every 3-4 months now.
Thanks for your help!

For someone who only bowls every once in a while, for medium heavy conditions, I would suggest either a Slash or a Freak A Zoid. You won't spend as much money as the high performance line, and those balls will be a logical step up from your Nitro. You don't want to get something that is very different from your current ball. You could easily get discouraged, and that is not what anyone wants.

Hey kfortune,

Clint's suggestions are right on.  I also usually suggest mid range balls as well because the individual can decide on whether he/she needs more or less hook from that point on for their next piece.  The Freakazoid is a very good med piece that will give you a very good midlane read and finish on most average conditions.

I would say the Freakazoid as well. It is a very good piece for someone that is just getting back into the game. It is stronger than the equipment of old, but should be controllable.

Need some additional information.  I have been out of the bowling lingo for a long time.  What is this information talking about and what should I look for.  Being left handed, etc.
This was on a slash.
This ball is 15 lbs. 3 oz. with 3 top and a 2" pin

15 lbs. 3oz. is the total weight of the ball.

3oz. top weight means (this was taken from the unofficial FAQ section):

POSITIVE WEIGHT (top, finger, positive side)
Weight on a ball that tends to enhance the hook and/or to get the ball into a roll later down the lane; top weight, positive side weight and finger weight are considered positive weights.

2" pin means the pin is 2 inches from the centre of gravity.

Freak-A-Zoid all the way.  I am partial to that ball.  It is so versatile and hits really well.  Try it and you will love it.  You won't want to put it down.  I beat my husband with it all the time  Sorry Chappy!
