4 new balls for me....
« on: July 12, 2005, 04:13:33 PM »
...but how to drill them?

Freak-A-Zoid:  3.5oz top, 4.75" pin
Rule GP2: 1.75 top, CG is basically in line with Pin-MB...3" pin
Arsenal Angular:  1.75 top, 4" pin
Heat:  Hasn't arrived yet, but I'm expecting a 4" pin.

Here's a link to my reviews of current Track equipment: http://www.ballreviews.com/Reviews/ReviewerReviews.asp?UserID=20600  I also have a Rule and an Xception, but they don't figure prominently into my tournament arsenal.

Here's my situation:  I'm bowling regularly in the PBA's Eastern Region (it's my 3rd season), and I've been bowling fairly well in tournaments and regionals over the past 6-7 months.  I currently have a sponsor (thanks Dad ), and since I've had a little more success than I anticipated this year, I'm starting to think about sponsorship from a ball company in a year or 18 months.  I currently throw the Track equipment that I mentioned previously in the reviews, along with the Rule and Xception in league at times, and I also have some non-Track stuff that I have had success with, namely a couple of V2 Pearls and the Zone Classic.  Track is my first preference for a ball company, so I'm trying to get a good tournament arsenal together exclusively from Track that will help me decide if I want to pursue a potential sponsorship from them in the future.

Can you guys help me with some layout ideas?  I want the Rule GP2 to be drilled stronger than my first GP2...that's the only thing I'm sure of.  The one I have now is great, but I could use one that's "REALLY" aggressive on complete floods.  For the Arsenal Angular, I'm thinking of a control layout of some sort because I don't like flippy reactions on tougher patterns...would be open to a surface change as well if needed.  For the Freak-a-Zoid, I'm open to almost anything...I've heard that it has a "V2-like" reaction, and I do love my V2 Pearl...and for the Heat, I'm thinking it would work well on the short (#2) pattern that we bowl on.

Thanks for your thoughts and consideration!

Hi Jeff,

Glad to hear you're doing well in the regionals, keep up the good bowling bud.

quote:
My Rule GP2 has the pin 5" from my PAP, MB 4.375" from my PAP. Pin is 4.25" above the midline

For your new GP2 on floods and stronger then #1, let's do a 4-4.25x3mb from pap with the pin about 2 above midline.  In comparison, this should start sooner and help you get the ball rolling earlier on the heavier stuff.

Controlling the Angular is a tough one, this ball lives up to it's name.  I'm thinking maybe a 3x2 with the pin about 2.5-3 above mid to help lay the core down early so it doesn't store a ton for the backends.  This should help keep it more tame and mellow then any pin positioning further back which would cause it to have more of a skid/flip reaction.

I think the FreakaZoid with it's lower rg actually reads the mids harder then the V2 pearl.  For me, the FAZ would pull up halfway down the lane almost on anything that wasn't flooded and would begin it's move.  I'd say maybe a 4.5x3.5 with the pin about 3-3.5 above mid to just utilize it's strength and even out the backs some.

The Heat I would put at 5x3 with the pin 4 above mid to push it downlane on the med drier conditions and just stay smooth as well.  Let us know what you think and we'll try and help you out bud.

Rick-

I just scaled out the layouts that you suggested.  The Rule GP2 was pretty close to what I thought I wanted to do- keep the pin low, MB out by my PAP.  It looks like the MB will be past my VAL.  Looks good to me!

I like the looks of the layout on the Angular.  It looks like it's in the neighborhood of Track's #4 layout, which is supposed to be pretty smooth.

I have a question on the Freak-a-Zoid's layout.  With a similar layout on my CrunchTime, I have a ball that's pretty skid-flippy.  Is the Freak-a-Zoid overall a less-flippy ball?  I'm wary of having another skid-flip type of reaction because I don't find a use for them too often...just curious on that!

Also, it looks like I'll need a weighthole on all 3 balls.  Where would you suggest placing them?  I'm not sure why, but my current ball driller has never drilled a ball for me with a weighthole below my midline.  That's something I would like to try sometime if it would be useful for me.  I do have a Freak-a-Zoid blem as well, with essentially the same specs, if you think it would be beneficial for me to try out a lower weighthole.

I'll let you know when my Heat arrives; I'm guessing Thursday.  Thanks for all of your help!

Thanks man.  I've had a lot of success with pins next to or below my fingers, so I'm glad that seems to be a good option for my new equipment!

Jeff,

I like Rick's layouts suggestions. The 4.5x3.5 on the Freakazoid is not going to be ver skid/flip unless you hit one of the conditions that tends to make everything skid/flp.

For the weightholes I would throw the balls without the holes in practice some and see if you think you need to tweek the reactions at all. Let us know then, and we can help you.

With the lower rg of the FAZ, it shouldn't be as skid/flippy as the CT.  However, if you have some concerns, you can change the layout to a 4x3.

Like Ex states, try them first to see your reactions before we decide how to fine tune them.  One more note, if we're looking for more overall control, we may not want to drill any hole that increases the differential but tell us how they look and we'll go from there.

Rick-

I think I'll stick with the 4.5 x 3.5...I only know what bowling balls work well for people; I'm not so good with layouts.  I'll get some pictures up of the balls once they've been drilled, which will hopefully be about half an hour after the Heat arrives...

Hey guys,

The Heat has arrived!  I received a 3" pin, 4.25oz top weight.  With Rick's 5x3 pin 4" above midline, that leaves the CG about an inch above the midline... this drilling will still work, won't it?

Also received a bonus...an Arsenal Aggressive with a 2" pin, 1.75oz top weight.  I'm looking at a 4x3 drill on this one, might fit in well above my Angular or Slash and below my 2nd GP2.  We'll see...I've never turned down a free gift!

Let me know if you guys have any other ideas/suggestions!  Thanks again for the help thus far!

Rick-

I'm 4.75" for my middle finger and 4.875" for my ring finger.  I use Vise Grip inserts.

Thanks!

Hey Jeff,

Lay it out with the pin under bridge to see what your statics end up at.  With the pin under, it'll be just a little smoother roll vs the pin out like I was thinking originally.  It should still work fine for the intended condition.

Rick-

Going with the 5x3, I can put the pin under my ring finger, which puts the CG about 2.5" right and about .675" down.

With your original 4" above midline suggestion....suppose we drilled the fingers a little deeper if it had an ounce of fingerweight?

Hey Jeff,

That's fine also cause we would shorten the core some which would also help  the ball roll a little earlier and smoother.  Either way is okay....

Rick,

Thanks for the confirmation!  I'm getting everything but the Arsenal Aggressive drilled on Monday night (still not sure what I want to do with the Aggressive)...so I should get a chance to throw everything on Tuesday afternoon, which would allow me to report back at some point Tuesday night!

Thanks to Rick and everyone else who has provided assistance so far!
