What to add....Darkside/Crunchtime or Hex?
« on: December 21, 2003, 08:05:57 PM »
Ok, I have plenty of other stuff from other companies but with track I have a Phenom Unleashed, just acquired a Crunch so I'm looking for something a step down and I can get all three of these for the same price.  Anyone have any comparisions between the Darkside, Crunchtime, and Hex?

I've only thrown the Crunch Time out of those three, but I can tell you it's been the ONLY ball out of my bag ever since I bought it. If it holds up like it has for the first 20+ games, it could be my all-time favorite ball.

All of these balls are availible to me so I can get whatever I want...I just wanted to know how these three balls compared to each other, scores and how they hit don't matter to me.  I want to know how they react on the lane and what conditions they are best suited for.

I have not thrown the Crunch Time (YET), but I have the Hex Darkside currently and have had the Hex in the past. The darkside and hex have a very similiar reaction (mainly skid flip), but the Darkside will force you to have to move deeper on the lane and will recover better should you encounter carrydown. The lack of PUNCH on carrydown is the reason I got rid of the Hex. The Darkside is not great on carrydown, but it is definately better than the Hex.

For me, the Darkside covers a few more boards but is slighlty smoother because of the light particle load (it has the same cover as the Magic).  The Crunchtime/Hex had the same reaction for me (not sure if they are in fact the same ball).  They are fairly clean but turn the corner very well.  They work better than the Darkside when the heads start to go but you still need reaction downlane.  The Darkside really needs some head oil because of the cover but it also works better when there is some oil downlane.

I have never seen a hex darkside and tracks website makes no mention of such a ball. its not in there discontinued line or current. Is this an international ball?
i found this link and it says the ball the trashed and never made.

brimar,

It was suppose to be an international release only but a US distributor got hold of some and sold them locally.  If you do a search, you'll find several threads about it.

Well since this ball was never cleared by the pba, is this a legal ball to use in an ABC sanctioned league?

What I've learned about the Darkside being sold here in the US was that there were complications with production and probably costs exceeded projections so they gave up on it.  I thought the US distributor who has them, took all the ones that were produced here (before the problems occured) but I could be wrong.
Good luck with your choice and thank you for choosing Track.

So now I have a question.

Would you guys say the Crunchtime would be a good compliment to the Darkside? I need something for the times after the Darkside is checking up a little early and my Revmaster still can't make it around the corner.
Thanks,

Hi Dw23,

I can't speak in regards to the Darkside, I don't have one (Not released to staff).  However, CT compared to the RevM gave me exactly what you're looking for.  My CrunchTime looks like a stronger version of the RevM, with some (med)oil, it clears the heads easily and starts to pull up in the midlane and turns over with a very strong arc in the back.  This ball should do the trick for you.
Good luck and feel free to contact me if you have any further questions, thanks.

just curious what did u guys do to ur revmaster to make it so weak i drilled mine strong and it can hook the lane and hooks a lot more than my darkside which for me is only a med-light oil ball

Hi Stormer,

I laid out my RevM at 5x 2 1/2 pin above split fingers.  This gave me quite a bit of early midlane but the ball had a very low RG so it could've been that also but it pulled so quick, the backend became just arcing.  You may also be seeing the difference between particle and resin reactions on a drier condition.
Your particle's going to want to create friction early and more even throughout the lane vs a resin which skids and then reads the dry and wants to make the change of direction much stronger.  If you want to discuss in further detail, feel free to contact me, thanks.
