2008 Open completed.
« on: March 23, 2008, 03:08:45 PM »
We arrived in town Saturday afternoon.

Hotel:
La Quinta Inn, on San Mateo Blvd.
--Room isn't bad, couldn't get a frig, so my beer is chillin in the sink.  The bathroom wasn't exactly clean, but the rest of the room is acceptable.  We are about 3 or 4 miles from decent food and shopping.

Food:
We ate at Bennigans for lunch on Sat....good food and good service.  Today we ate at Gardunos mexican food restaurant.  It was very good and the service was excellent.

Golf:
We played the University of New Mexico Championship course today.  I have never seen greens that hard or fast before and my score card showed it.  I finally put together a few good holes and saved a 96.  The people were very friendly and the GPS system in the carts was awesome.

Bowling:
Bowled the Rotogrip Challenge tonight.  I wanted to bowl it on fresh oil to see how oily it played.  In practice, I started with my shiny BW Bite.  I found a fair look playing 13 to 9ish.  I moved out and played em up 4/5 with my Anger towards the end of practice.  I shot 244 the first game and 193 the second game.  I think I'm sitting 4th for the day.  I didn't think the shot was overly hard.  Since I'm a gluten for punishment, I'm gonna bowl the BTM in the morning.

You have to visit the Isleta bowling center, go south on I25 and you'll see the casino.  It was pretty sweet looking center.

More to come tomorrow..

Agroves, thanks for the info....looking forward to your impression of the BTM.

Is this your first BTM or have you bowled in the past few years? If so, any comparisons to the shot it Reno, or Corpus?

Thanks again for the report.

Just got back from the BTM.  Got my butt kicked...  They were fresh and I struggled quite a bit.  I started out at 8 board and struggled to find a consistent reaction.  Move alittle right and it was thru the beak and alittle left and miss the head pin.  I shot 174 the first game, with two opens.  I moved in the next game, targeting 17 to 13 and shot 176 with two more opens.  I made a ball change and moved deeper for a clean 207.  The last game, I chopped two spares in the first six frames and threw in the towel.  I spent the rest of the game moving around looking and not finding much.  I tried up 5 and that just wasn't possible with my ball speed.  I moved to 14 at the arrows and tried alittle swing.  I still think the best look is start deep and move deeper.

I won't cash this year, but thats okay.  I really wanted to use it as a tune up for tonight.

I had some trouble with the approaches.  They are wood and spotty.  Some places I'd slide like crazy and others I couldn't slide at all.

Agroves,
Good Luck tonight as well. I hope you win all your brackets, cause that's the real moneymaker unless you can get into the top 50 or something.

Interesting about the BTM shot, this is the 2nd or 3rd time we've heard this. I have usually found a good shot outside there. Two years ago (Corpus) would up finsihing in the top 5, and last year, I had a good shot, just had the wrong ball, plus I wound up bowling alone and just got going way to fast with my feet by game 3. I checked your spec and I throw a little harder then you normally, i'm 18-19 on average, so maybe where you moved right and went high, I will be ok. But it's good to know about the shot inside though. Thanks again for the info.

Go play Paako Ridge. Must play if you like the University course. Paako makes it look like a average muni course.

I bowled alone today as well.  I should have waited for another participant.  I was bowling way to fast and not taking my time...

Andrew, is the Isleta center the one with the staggered pairs with a small fence/barrier between the pairs?

Agroves,
I forgot all about that item. I saw the flyer for the tournament at the Isleta center. It is very interesting especially with that much guaranteed regardless of entries. have you bowled that one yet or are you planning to? I know a lot of people didn't put time in their schedules to bowl there because they didn't know about it. Any info on the shot there if you did bowl it? Thanks again.

I've heard of some tournament out there, but it isn't my plans to try it.  We stopped out there to check it out and let the boy bowl a couple of games.

Just got back from team event. I shot 650 with my BW bites.  I started out playing up 7 for two frames.  I wasn't happy with my reaction so I took a huge step left with my shiny widow bite and shot 216 the first game.  I made a ball change to my dull widow bite the next game for 227.  I never moved my feet, stood 25 and played 18 to 13.  Best of all!
30 clean frames

I also bowled the Roto challenge again.  I won the squad today and high game, with 433 and 247.  It played alittle drier today, so I used my shiny bite up 5/6.

Agroves,
Great Bowling. Congrats on the 30 clean. Did you remember to get into the 30 clean pot? I had 30 clean in team last year but forgot to get into the pot, so I missed out on about $250. Good luck in Doubles and Singles.

Well, just got back from D/S.  The team on our doubles pair was playing the lanes the same as I did during team.  The teams on the singles pair were all over the place and spraying it to boot.

I started with my dull BW bite but couldn't get it down the lane, so I switched to my shiny Bite and found a good look.  I start with 226 and followed it with a 258 with 2 opens.  The last game I started getting the ball into the swing early and struggled to a 191....for 675 in doubles.

The singles pair was super tight, I even flagged a 5 pin.....couldn't believe it didn't hook.  It took 7 frames to find the proper ball and line, which again brought me to my shiny Bite.  I start with another 191 and follow with another 258 as the lanes open up alittle.  The next game the lanes started hooking, I kept chasing it left but had two opens for 188.....639 for singles.

All events was 1962.

Yes, I got into the 30 clean pot.  I won 378 for the Roto Challenge and cleared about 300 in brackets, I put in 175 during team and 250 during doubles.

I used either my shiny bite or my dull bite for every game.  I stood no further right than 23 and no further left than 30.  My target at the arrows varied from 14 to 19 and always looked for 12 at the 45' mark.

Good luck!
