Surface prep for nationals
« on: May 23, 2010, 04:56:22 AM »
I was just wondering what balls and surface people are using at nationals.  I also want to know if you guys think my equipment has the proper surface in your opinion.

Balls I am taking-

Break Out-pin beside ring mb stacked below, weight hole low (2k abralon)

Rival-pin over ring finger cg stacked, no weight hole (4k)

Cell Pearl-pin over middle finger mb to the right of thumb, no weight hole (4k)

Villain-pin under bridge cg swung right 45deg, low weight hole (2k)

Is that enough surface? Too Much?

Think you have an okay line up.  You should probably find yourself bowling better with the Cell Pearl.  I would advise maybe having a lower end ball polished for D/S just in case they are flying.

I would suggest seeing the guys in the Hammer booth if you take all of these balls and ask them or Shawn.

Just one question and not trying to high jack your post, but Cbjdc your the guy who said the Invasion was junk at Reno? What did you use and when did you bowl and your scores?

Ship,

I don't recall saying the invasion was junk out at reno.. I have said on other posts that I do not think the invasion is a great ball nor even a ball to use.  I base this on five bowlers who purchased this ball and within about 3 weeks they got rid of their equipment for other storm products.

Now I will be going out to reno in about a week and I am taking a total bedlam, tropic heat, full swing.

If you want to talk scores from last year (not a good comparison to this year yet) but I shot 428, 728, 613... The 428 was during team and the 728 AND 613 was bowled with a new ball drilled that morning before the tourney started.

SK, I think honestly if you are concerned with what you have I think you should see who is on your team and how they play.  If they are taking dull balls, or like to swing the ball I think what you have is just fine.  However, again if they are going to cause you to have an over under reaction then this should be okay.

Hey Ship just in case you wondering what I did say

"Honestly don't even waste your money on the invasion. Its not a ball you really could use at nationals from what I have read. The virtual gravity is the cornerstone ball right now for storm. For you cell pearl you may want to go with a Reign or even look at another ball company. Storm right now does not have a pearlized ball outside of a reign that really is that good.
YES storm folks I said it. The VE is junk, to prove my point why don't you check out all the proshops putting these balls on clearance now. If I was you prmtme wait till the new release master line ball. It should be out sometime in june."

c,

not sure what I am reading since riggs only shot a high 1800 if I am reading his name properly.  From his own blog he stated that the VE  would have been a better ball choice. (Still Assuming I am reading the person correctly)

Now I simply ask this is it the equipment that made him score well or talent.  I know its talent...

I am simply trying to provide the best advice for someone asking about the surface prep for their balls.

Jeff shot a little better that 1800, 1892.  His quote about the VE was that it would have work as well as the Invasion, but he wasn't changing ball with the look he had.

as for surface, it very difficult to say what the best surface for an person is, since rev rate, ball speed, etc have an impact on your surface decision..

My real heartburn was the blanket statement that the Virtual Energy being junk.  While that may be your experience, I see a lot of them being used successfully on a variety of patterns (house and PBA), so to make a blanket statement like that is a little harsh.

CG,

I will say only this.  Look at the honest reviews on this website.  49 Bowlers reviewed it.  Remove the amaetur reviews and look at the honest ones.  I am not saying that it was all bad but I am noticing either you really loved the ball or you really hated the ball from reading those reviews.

Bad comments
-VE Pushes to far on the lane and does not recover
-surface prep to tame the ball down on the backend.  Mulitple attempts
-Ball skids in the oil and does not recover

To be fair
-VE great ball gives good backend when the lanes breakdown and need a strong arc
-200 avg bowlers shoots well at challenge

I simply go back to my earlier statement, I am on the very opposite end from just obeservation and viewing it on the lanes.  The ball just doesn't work when you have a better ball both price point wise and reaction in the reign.  Just my IMO.
