I'm a buddy of Nod's but don't hold it against me :-)
A couple of thoughts.
Synthetic approaches any any environment are inconsistent in my experience. They are very tough on us with bad knees, regardless of tempature, humidity or any other condition. And for me, the best approaches at Nationals was this year by far. However, they still have sticky spots and slick spots. All the sole changing in the world does not change that.
Spare shooting-As I have observed to Nod and others in my group, something about the Nationals environment degrades peoples spare shooting as a generalization. I'm sure it's mental.
I love the tournament and every year it is a different challenge. This year I was one of eight (as we were told by Bowling Ball Express) people whose balls did not successfully arrive in Corpus. I had to purchase a new spare ball and a new Mercury, and had brought a Morich TA, also newly drilled. It proved a challenging.
I do think 4 minutes (or 5 minutes)of practice time for doubles is reasonable for athletes (especially with old beat up bodies). However, the only way to change that is the same way it was changed with team. Everyone must complain every year until they change ti.
I do not fly (I do Amtrak where I can) so I don't have the travel issues others have, so I stay out of that.
And, it's my wife's and I's one vacation by ourselves each year.
My thoughts.
