ABC lane condition in league
« on: February 23, 2005, 03:42:26 AM »
Our sport shot compliant league uses oil patterns that are sport shot compliant, but the league is not certified as as sport shot.  The league decided to use the 2005 ABC oil pattern for the rest of the season.  This week was the first week for it.  I know the actual pattern at Nationals will not play the same due to lane condition differences, etc.  However it was interesting.

The oil pattern is not very long.  The track area was not very forgiving.  I tried the third and fourth arrows, but I had no mistake area.  For me, the best result was when I played outside.  I ended up playing up 6 with a lot of speed and very little side rotation.  I saw a lot of people throw strikes, but if you missed your target splits were common.  The splits were not only from going high such as the 4-6-7, but also 2-10's from being light.

As I said before, I know the actual shot will play differently, but this is a chance to use various balls and see their reaction.  This should be fun.

CPA,

Do you bowl the sport league on wood or on synthetic? The line you scored on is what i used last year with a V2 solid. As long as you get breakpoint correct out on the edge if you can muster flat roll it is not bad. Have heard they put out a little more oil in the track area than last year. Also remember they are using Brunswick oil  which tend to be a little more viscious than most. Good luck, wish more houses would do stuff like that.

We have the ABC National oil pattern set up on one pair for practice during the day. It plays similar to what CPA described.

It's pretty much what you would expect -- miss to the outside and you're looking at a washout. Tug the ball, and there is little or no hold. The shot rewards accuracy, consistency and speed control.

When the shot was fresh, I had my best success playing a tighter line with the ball crossing around the 12-13 boards at the arrows. I'm not a high rev player, so I can get away it. After the shot opened up a bit, I was able to move further outside.

It would be refreshing to see the shot in league; unfortunately, that's not going to happen.

CPA,

When we talked to Kegel in the past they would instruct you to put down a slightly higher volume to emulate the harder synthetic surface. I believe we had to change the buff length also in previous years to get a closer comparison. Again shooting on it will probably only help you but remember when goin to the ABC's some of the variables will be different (ie, lane surface and possibly oil type) This is just something to think about in case they don't play the same. Good luck, you all are lucky. I'm locked out this year due to family constraints.

No way to duplicate the shot.

A couple of our guys even practiced at the RiverCenter the week before the tournament.  One of them thought they were easy and that he's shoot close to 2100.  I think he shot 1604 or something like that.

The best look I saw from the rightside was a guy with soft speed, turned it pretty good and played in about 20-25.  He had plenty of right and if he tugged it, he'd hit high flush.
