Airlines / Baggage
« on: January 14, 2004, 07:34:45 PM »
There is a topic on the bowl.com site under ABC tournament regarding the new restrictions on baggage.  Although it is different from airline to airline, there seems to be a consensus that the weight limit is 50lbs per bag, and only one of the 2 allowed checked bags can be bowling equipment.  That would seem to say we are allowed 2 balls and shoes unless willing to pay the $25 or $50 additional charge for exceeding the weight and/or 3 of bag restrictions.

Beyond that, an option would be to ship equipment to the hotel and have them hold until arrival.  I have checked that with the Silver Legacy where I will be staying and I was informed that they will accept and hold my equipment but there is a one time flat rate per box based on weight.

Comments, thoughts??

The last time I went to Reno for the ABCs, I shipped (UPS) 4 balls from Maryland for about $50 plus I think it was another $25 or so for the Silver Legacy to hold them for me.  I plan on doing the same this year.

With the new airline restrictions, it make no sense to me to take them on the plan if you plan on taking more than two balls.

Capt. Scmbg,
There has been talk on the ABC discussion forum about a shipping/receiving service that the ABC is making available to the bowlers.  There is a post by Lucas Wiseman that alludes to it.

Here is the link:

Also, check out this thread on the same subject:

I hope this is helpful.

Let me add to what I posted before.  According to this link,

http://www.bowl.com/bowl/abc/common/static.html?page=abc04_tournament_traveltips

it would seem to be cost effective to pack four balls (if you are taking that many or more) in a four ball case and check it.  The link implies that the airlines would charge an additional $25 to check a piece of luggage that is between 50 and 70 (or 50 and 100 for some airlines) pounds, whose linear dimensions do not exceed a total of 62".  A bowling ball case should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 62 pounds, assuming 15 pound balls, and under 48" total linear dimensions (18+"x18+"x9+").

We did all clothes in carry-on bag (please include a second pair of  bowling shoes if you have them). The two bags you check in can be 2 ball bowling totes wrapped in Bubble Wrap and in a cardboard box marked fragile or two ball rollers. This gives you 4 balls. A couple of guys had an extra 2 balls shipped to their hotel. We have never had a hotel charge a holding fee yet and if you are smart discuss this with the Hotel upon booking including supervisors names if they agree to hold them for free. When shipping the balls find out where a UPS store or shipping agent (FEDEX,USPS) is in the area you are shipping to. The rates outside the convention centers are always about double what real rates are.

I have flown as recently as October on Southwest to Reno.  They allowed up to 70lbs and I was able to check up to 3 bags, 2 were bowling equipment.  No additional charges.

I did speak with some one from their reservations who told me I could check 3 bags plus one additional for sporting equipment at no charge.  I haven't tried and probably won't try to see if that is correct.

How stringent are the airlines with this:

"You may substitute bowling equipment for one piece of the two allowable checked pieces of luggage. Bowling equipment is considered as one pair of shoes and two bowling balls in an appropriate bag."

I thought of taking a 2 ball roller, and my beat up 3 ball roller, put 2 balls in each and shove clothes where needed in those and my carry-on.  I was going to ship balls, but decided on a 4-ball arsenal that I was comfortable with.  I have tourneys on each weekend before and after my ABC dates and don't want to be without my main balls.

RW - Thanx for the links, I've seen that before but unfortunately the tournament staff doesn't seem to have complete details yet.  I hope they can get an accurate handle on it in the next couple of weeks.  It might save a lot of time and hassle if they can make it work.

cgilyeat & leftyhitrak - My first thought was shipping it to the hotel.  I thought that with the 12 or so of us staying at the Silver Legacy they might back off of the hold for arrival charge.  Didn't happen.  I'm still looking into an option of shipping everything to a nephew of one of our bowlers and he'll drop it off at the stadium for us.

Outasync - Southwest does seem a little more lenient.  Usually, the baggage weight and number is not an issue when flying out of Ohare, but the return from Reno has always been more restrictive.  I might be tempted to ship equipment back from Reno and cut down on the luggage when returning.

I had no problem with my 4 ball roller taken apart, plus my luggage leaving Reno in October.

I just booked my tickets over the weekend with Southwest and will confirm what OutaSync said about the weight and bag limits.  I know other airlines are not as lenient on either issue so best to check first before booking the tickets.  I could have gotten a ticket about $20 cheaper with another airline but they only allowed one bowling bag to be checked in.

As far as Reno airport, most airports seem to change the rules during the ABC Nationals so I dont know what it will be like then.  Last time it was at Reno, I had no problems with checking in two double ball bags.

I just booked a trip and decided to check the baggage policy in case there were any changes recently.  For anyone interested here is what I got directly from the Southwest web sight:

"Baggage Allowance: For each ticketed Customer, Southwest allows three (3) checked pieces with size limitations for each individual piece.

Weight and Size Allowance: Maximum weight is 70 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height) per checked piece of luggage.

Bowling balls may be accepted as checked or carryon baggage in an appropriate bowling bag, which has a metal frame specifically designed for transporting bowling balls. Any bowling ball that is not packed in an appropriate bowling ball bag will be conditionally accepted. Bowling balls carried onboard must be stowed underneath the seat only."

The one that surprised me is you can carryon bowling balls.  I thought that was not allowed.

Perhaps there are bowlers in high places at Southwest Airlines . . . and I don't mean the pilots, if you catch my drift.

You might want to confirm whether they will allow the ball as carry-on...the only times I flew with equipment were pre- 09/11 and even then, I got pulled to the side because the equipment could not properly process the core of the ball.

I agree with El Duce, I'm going to get my 49.99999 lbs. of gravel also.

Has anyone tried to check 2 bowling ball bags as their checked luggage?  Or contacted airlines about the policy?  I really don't want to ship balls if I don't have to, but for my bowling comfort I need an arsenal of 4 balls.

I have flown both United and Southwest with a 2  2ball bags and the only problem was with the top bag on United.  They had to hand check each pocket.  The bottom bag went through no complications.

Southwest, no problems at all with the 2  2 ball bags.
